I have a single barrel Holley that is causing me problems, so I bought a carb kit and installed it.......still needs work.
What is the "spark arrestor" thingy that threads into the carb, what does it do ?
It is a about the size of a quarter with vent holes on the outside and a diaphram inside with a spring loaded plunger into the carb.
I'm not sure, but I think you are describing your power valve. The spring must be free to slide the plunger. The holes on the outside are to provide the atmospheric pressure on the little diaphram inside. Good luck, John
The spark arrestor is common to Holley 1 and 2 bbl carbs using the Holley Lodomatic type distributor. These were used roughly 1948-57 in various Fomoco products.
It is used to retard the spark advance under certain load conditions that couldnt be handled by venturi vacuum alone.
The power valve is internal to the carb.
If you want to get into more of the details there is a very thorough description of the Holley carb including the Spark Control Valve you had a question about at this link: carb link
If you are still having trouble with your carb a good read-through of the manual (at the link above) will give you all the info you need to get it in top working condition. I have the manual in Word format and would be happy to e-mail it to you if you'd like. The file is about 4.7 MB so I usually chop it in half and mail it in two pieces. Be prepared for a long download if you are using a modem.
