My 83 6.9 is having glow plug problems. Sometimes the glow plugs come on sometimes they dont. sometimes when they dont i can bump the starter, turn the key off then back on and they then start working. 8 new plugs, new relay. only thing left is a faulty controller and a messed up ignition switch. Anyone know how to test the controller before i go and drop $70 on a new one?
I dont know of any tests right off, but if you are going to change it out I would recommend spraying it with every penetrating oil you have right now... The body of the controller is aluminum and is known for twisting off.
There is a possibility that it is your ignition switch so you may want to test if your controller is getting power first. I do not have a pinout handy but one of the wires to the controller should be switched power and you should be able to locate it with a test light. If not, it is probably the switch.
I replaced the switch last year when I bought it because the lady couldnt find a key. I ended up taking out the little gear at the end of the tumbler and I know I got it in wrong. to get the radio and everything else to come on after it starts ive got to turn the key back slightly. But it did fine for a year and a half. Now its working whenever it feels like it.

In that case, I would suspect the switch first. You may be able to adjust the electrical portion of the switch further down the column. It is located on top of the column under the dash area. You can loosen the two screws that hold it on and adjust it up and down to accomidate for the different positon of the rod to the ignition switch.
Here is the location of the switch.
