You were right on the money with the modulator !
Now Im trying to figure out which tranny this is for modulator.Parts guy says they dont list c-6 past 1980 just the aod4,but her shifter just shows 1,2,drive isnt that a 3 speed ?
Know the cleanup of tranny fluid going into intake?I know tranny fluid is a good engine cleaner but I dont think this is good for the air intake. My jeep is the only fuel injected vehicle I have experience with and I have used injector cleaner poured directly into throttle body with good results, although it is easily accessible.I'm thinking if I take that same vacuum port with a clean hose and siphon directly from cleaner bottle into intake system I might get a good cleaning that way.Taking the intake off as you know is a major project alone.Oxygen sensor is probably in order also?
Oh yeh, Mom would like to give you a big hug for helping us out with this. She is not made of money and a mechaics bill would really strain her retirement budget.I'm still trying to get her to trade it in on something easier to work on for me.
Tell Mom thanks for the hug. I'm not sure which tranny is in that year van. I have the drive 2 1 in mine too. The OD is activated by a button on the end of the gear shift. When I lock it out of od by pushing the button a little lite goes on. Push the button to activate od, and the lite goes off. So you may have od and not realise it. If you don't have the button on the gear shift, it's probably a C-6. If it has the vacuum line running to the tranny, It probably hooks in beyond the throttle body on the manifold, you could spray some tb cleaner if you wanted to, can't hurt. The fuel rail and injectors are part of the lower intake and probably ok. These is a tag on the drivers door, or door jam that has a code # for tranny, diff, etc. Find the code and look it up in your manual. It will tell what tranny code means. Also there might be a tag or stamp on the tranny case. If you found the modulator bad, you could take it out and use the part # on that. I had this prob on a 85 with the C6 and 4.9. I have a 96 now, and I don't know for sure it has a vacuum modulator. If it's bad, I'm pretty sure they're cheap and easy to change. Getting late..gotta go and let me know how you do. Luck
Glad you found the smoking prob anyway. Steve83 knows what he's talking about better than me. Looks like you'll be spending some time in the manual. It would be a good idea to go over the emission and driveability chapters. Very informative in regards to codes, testing sensors, and component location.
I did alot of work on my 85 myself,so I knew alot about it. The 96 has the obdII, different animal, plus 5.8 with OD tranny. I haven't had many problems with the sensors yet, so I'm feeling my way around this one too. Read over those chapters, you'll learn alot. I'm gonna bone up on them myself.
I'll be back !
