I have a 302 from an '87 bronco I wanna replace my 170 6 cylinder in my '69 bronco half cab.. The 302 was in the rain got a little rust in the chambers, etc, I tore the 302 down to bare block and found that it spun some rod bearings as we'll, and the chambers still have the cross hatches, I was messing with the idea of getting a scat rotating assembly stroker kit, I was wondering what kind of power it could get? I'm gonna be plowing with the bronco this winter, and need something a lil tougher than the 170, it's getting worn out, it's the stock motor.. Any ideas or advice? I don't want anything too crazy something that I can plow with an play a little..
I think a stock rebuild of the 302 will get you about 200hp range, which will be a step up from the 170. But if you're going to rebuild the 302, you can opt for a RV type cam that will provide a moderate increase over stock without hurting driveability. Get one that favors low end torque vs high end power, unless you have really low gears. Beyond that, things start getting more costly. You can add bigger valves when getting a valve job, and have the exhaust ports smoothed out or ported.
Plowing with the Bronco? Then you definitely want some low end grunt and not high end horse power especially since small block Fords were not known for low end torque.
If you build a 347 stroker and don't get 400 ft/lbs of torque out of it(and close to 300hp) you seriously messed up. For that power level you need nothing more than a decent RV cam and some porting work on the stock heads.
