Hi guys I was out driving tonight and our 03 escape started making a thumping sound like you hear when you have a flat. I turned the corner and noticed that the steering wheel is now at a 30 degree angle as I'm going straight and when I hit the brakes the steering wheel straightens out but the car doesn't change direction. It's dark so I can only see so much but the tie rods are good and tight from what I can tell same with ball joints. They just did that subframe recall a month or so ago. My concern is steering box but other than these symptoms it seems to be working fine. Has anyone run into this issue or have any ideas. I'm going to investigate more in the morning when I have some daylight any suggestions on where to look would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
so after some investigating this morning i have found that the part of the subframe where fords so called reinforcement bracket is bolted has completely seperated so i can shift the entire control arm around by wiggling the tire. looks like im making a phone call to my dealer tomorrow. anyone know if this is something the dealer may cover or am i getting primed for a scrap run this week. I don't know the exact stipulations of the recall but you would think that since this was done within the last two months the subframe would of shown enough corrosion to be deemed unsafe
Where do you live (what state)? I saw this recall, but didn't think much about it since I live in NC and they almost never salt the roads here. I think the recall was to keep you from loosing total control, which it sounds like it did. Could have been BAD if you had not done the recall!
Hi guys sorry for the delayed response. So we ended up forking out the money and having the subframe replaced. I talked to ford before hand and all they are doing is adding a reinforcement bracket in order to prevent an accident in the event of a failure. I can take a pic and post it for you but I'm not sure how to do that on here. If someone can enlighten me i will be glad to oblige. Thanks
