How man miles are on it? Might be time for a tune up. Is it running sluggish, having any misses, idling rough, etc? You might look into a new set up Motorcraft plugs and wires. Also, clean the MAF sensor and check your air filter. Replace the PCV valve (its only like 6 bucks). Replace your Fuel Filter (should be done about every 10,000 miles anyway). Check the pressure of your fuel lines. ANy other ideas?
Where did mpg USED to be?
What rear end?
Auto or manual transmission?
Is this city, hiway, or combined?
How many miles on the truck?
Any performace/operation issues noted?
Any change in tire size?
sorry should have stated details.... It is new 2003, sport, flair side, manual, 3.55, 2300 miles. Has gibson super truck exhaust and mac air intake. The rest of truck is stock. 13-14 MPG city not sure about highway yet.
My guess, it's just a guess, but an educated guess....
your truck is suffering from a bad case of "lead foot".
Don't you love the sound of those new exhaust???
Seriously, invest in one tank full of gas pedal discipline. Shift it on the short side and drive it like you have a raw egg between your foot and the gas pedal.
I'll bet you get about 16 mpg around town (unless you live in very hilly terrain.)
I've got a 4.2 w/ same rear end and the 5 speed.
MPG is greatly influenced by how I drive it.
I have to agree with Brian. With it only being 2300 miles old. There shouldn't be anything mechanically wrong with it. I think you are hotroddin it. I have a 98 F150 4.2L same rear end automatic and I get about 16 city, 18 highway.
i know with my '99 reg cab i got 16 until about 50,000 miles, then progressively better, now getting 19-20 at 90k+ i think these drivetrains need to loosen up, break in for a while. just be patient.
