Hey im knew here but ive got a 1974 f100 4x4 that has a seized motor im suspecting anyway, it was running just fine when it was parked a little more than a year ago and we swapped rear ends in the truck a few days ago and when we went to start it we got nothing. have since tried manually turning it by hand from the harmonic balancer bolt and still nothing, have pulled plugs and filled cylinders with various concoctions of penatrating oils and tried every couple of days and still nothing, so i pulled the pan and looked up underneith and everything seems to be fine as far as crank main bearings timing chain no rust around the pistons,......... im confused and looking for some help any input would be appreciated.
Thanks
Bryce
Welcome to FTE. A bit of introduction goes a long way here, as well as pictures, if available.
If the truck was running and it seized up while sitting it a pretty safe bet the pistons and rings are stuck to the cylinders. Using the penetrating oil would have been my first move as well. I prefer to use a 50/50 mixture of ATF and Acetone. It seems to work better than most of the over the counter remedies I have found.
Have you drained the oil to make sure no water is present in the crankcase?
Is your truck a stick or an auto? If it is a stick can you have another rig tow, or push, your truck while you pop the clutch with the trans in high gear. Usually a sudden, sharp jolt will break an engine free.
If your truck has an auto trans you may need to use a pry bar on the flex plate ring gear and work the engine back and forth until it turns freely.
thnx for the quick replys, it is a stick and tried towing it with another pickup and still froze up. I drained the oil and pulled the pan too look up inside and couldnt see anythig real obvious, so my next thought was to pull the head maby and fill with acetone and atf just dint really wanna have too but thats the way it goes sometimes i suppose, any more quick tips would be appreciated thnx again
thnx for all the info guys it broke loose last night under very little pressure was actually able to climb under remove dust cover for fly wheel and back it up finally. any ideas on what to run in it too help smooth things back out as best as possible?
thnx bryce
If the rings were stuck (and it sounds like they were) they lost their seat to the cylinder wall. Use kerosene and ATF to free it up to the point it spins freely. After you're comfortable enough to start it, run it to operating temperature, then drip ATF down the carburetor. It'll reseat the rings. Of course, it's going to smoke like a freight train while you're doing this and you may need another set of plugs after that, but it should be ok after that.
A quart of ATF through the carb should work wonders. I usually use Marvel Mystery Oil and follow the directions on the can.
Anything petroleum based with a high detergent content would work. There are several products on the market. The detergent will help to cut the old oil, gas and varnish from surfaces as well as help lube the top end.
Run the engine at a fast idle, 1500-2000 rpm and slowly pour whatever you are using through the carb and prepare for massive smoke.
Don't let the engine die. It might be hard to start.
