Chad,

Great write up on the parking brake handle assy, but I don't see any of the images that I guess originally were attached. Is there a secret to viewing the images?

Thanks,
Chad

All the images are there. Its just your internet provider. Some providers and employers block images. I thought the same when I read this at work, but when I went home I saw all of them.

Nice write up Chad! I was not a member of the forum when you first posted it so I haven't seen it until now. So my question is this: can you assemble the cable to the handle off the truck and then install both as an assembly, or is it necessary to connect the cable to the handle in the cab?

I used white acrylic paint and a small hobby paint brush to repaint the BRAKE letters on my F100. The F250 restoration is going to require quite a bit more work though since I'm changing the front cable to the slightly longer PS specific front cable. The '75 edition only shows the PS specific cable as being for the F100, but it also doesn't show any of the cables for a short bed, and I'm pretty sure they came with parking brakes and didn't have excess cable looped up under the truck somewhere. My F250 is also in much rougher shape than my F100, so I might send it out for re-plating as you suggest..

Hi Larry - I imagine you could assemble the cable to the sector shaft of the assembled parking brake outside of the truck and then feed the cable through the opening from the inside out. It might be necessary or easier to leave the clip 2814 off until the top end of the cable is fed all the way through. There is also a clip/clamp typically holding the cable to the inner fender that would possibly need to be left off until it is routed. But, it does seem doable to me.

The OSI Volume 4 might list older cables but figuring out what was what might take a little doing. The non-PS front cable for the F250 is still available NOS, but without a part number for a possible PS steering specific front hose I wouldn't know what to look for exactly. Does the '68 MPC hard-copy list the other cable?

I believe I have 3 of the ones listed in the '75 edition.

C5TZ-2853-P

If there was one for the F250 with PS it would have also been 1966 number so C6TZ-2853-? Seems like it would be the same -C suffix. I don't see any of those anyway.

No, the '68 revision has the same information as the '75. I agree with your logic though; since both the 65/66 F100 and F250 without PS used the same front cable, the '66 PS F250 should also use the C6TZ 2853-C. I only have one, but when I get around to restoring the Ranger it will be a short bed, so I wouldn't be able to use it for that application anyway.

Very nice tutorial Thanks Chad

My wrong part, mustang brake handle, is still sitting on tool box. This is encouragement to to take assembly apart and see what I can do with the broken handle.

Another note. When I first got my 65, the parking brake could not be pulled and engaged.I figured the cable and pivots were all rusted frozen under body. I started working on getting all dash wiring and lights working. I noticed once I'd crawled up there, that the wrapped wires leading to the fuse block were pulled tightly across top of this tube and rod assembly holding the stop pin from moving at all. It stopped things alright...just not as intended. These trucks can be puzzles in so many ways. We rarely know what they've been through in 55 years. Such satisfaction when things all start coming together

I would prefer members use another source in posting photo's, particularly when their thread includes several pic's of their progress, because if they do not maintain their membership access to the photos is blocked, speaking from experience, I went to post photos using a digital camera.

What I found worked best for me was to loosen the slack, or remove the cables at the equalizing bar to the rear drums, then install components from the handle to the bar. I then would install, leaving slack in the cables until the rea brake cables were installed and then adjust the tension from the equalizing bar to the drum.

Hello all,

Sorry to heating up this old thread but I'm running out of ideas where to get a parking brake assy.
I have imported an 65 F100 2 wheel drive to Germany, for his age in good conditions, all chrome, emblems etc are still original and no dent's and the body needs only minor work.
Unfortunately one of the earlier owners installed some new gauges under the dash and removed the parking brake assy below the dashboard (and w/o that one no license in Germany) to have enough space.
So I started looking at official parts stores (LMC,...) since I made good experience wrt parts availability for my other US truck there --> nothing available.
Then to ebay... also nothing.
Then I used the free internet search and found this great forum where you posted already other sources to check for (Rearcounter,..) but also there is nothing to find.
Part number is 2780 in the OEM parts catalog.
Has anybody an idea or an contact I can use to find one of this (rare) parking brake assy?

Thanks and Grt from currently snowy Dresden in Germany.
Jens

Since that part is not reproduced and I’m assuming that you don’t have junkyards in Germany that are stocked with old American trucks...your best bet is probably through this website. Post a wanted ad in the classifieds here and keep posting in the forum. There are a few members here who visit the wrecking yards and some who have parts trucks. It may take some time. Also check withTurner auto wrecking in Fresno, California. They have miles and miles of older American vehicles. You can probably email them, though, shipping is another story. One more thing...make sure to look at the diagrams and get every single part you need for the hand brake assembly. The main assembly won’t help you if you’re missing a small part that goes with it! Good luck....

Another thought....start a new thread with appropriate title, such as, WANTED parking brake.... If you’re not a stickler for originality, you can also convert your hand brake to a foot-actuated parking brake. I got a foot-actuated brake assembly from a 74 truck and its much more convenient than a hand brake.

Searching eBay turned up this one (same state I'm in) but this is the handle only for the F350 style of transmission drum parking brake. Not the correct part number. I have some originals but I don't ship outside of the U.S.

If you are not looking for original and just want to get your truck on the road try looking for stuff they make for street rods. There are electric kits out there like this one... https://www.speedwaymotors.com/Speed...yABEgIBWPD_BwE
There are also floor mounted levers that I'm sure you can buy in a kit that could be used. Try searching on Lokar, I'd guess they make something.

All,

thanks for you quick answers and possible solutions. Will check with our official if an electronic operated brake is allowed and I also contacted Kathy and Tom from Flasback, hope they can support. If not than we will go for an foot operated ones.
Again, thanks for your input, great support here.
