NOS wiring harness.

My truck is a 1963 f100, 223, with four on the floor, flare side. The wiring is a rat's nest. I'm going to rewire it. I'm not a smart man. Are any harnesses made specifically for this truck so I can "plug and play?" I was told the ford connectors were obsolete and advised to save the old ones.

Forsaking that, are there any NOS wiring harnesses available for this truck (NumberDummy??) (I realize this is a long shot)

Looking forward to the collective wisdom on this forum!

ND - thanks for info! is this a complete wiring harness with connectors? I'm not real sure on terminology - I am almost ready to buy the Rebel 9 + 3 universal harness but I am all about simplifying - would the NOS be an easier install?

There's a place here in Garland, TX called HotRod Wires. They only carry Chevy and Mopar, but I was able to adapt the Chevy harness for my 64.

...also I believe that "Classic Harnesses" (not absolutely sure of the name) will make a new wiring harness, duplicating your original with connectors, etc. Might cost a little more, but would look original. Although the connectors may be obsolete, most repro harnesses from the 60's, 50's and even earlier, will have reproduction connectors which resemble the original ones. Do a search here on FTE and I think you'll find the source.

See 14401 in awful parts catalog pic.

This is only the dash wiring harness, but it pokes out of the firewall so other harnesses can connect to it.

Thanks!

As always, thanks for the info. With your discussion and advice on the topic and my studying of "the internets" I think I will go for the Rebel Wire 9+3 harness. I plan to sell tickets so people can watch my install and I have filed for copyrights on several yet-to-be-invented curse words. Did I mention that I am not an exceptionally smart man? This ought to be fun!

Now if all those ford electrical connectors weren't obsolete...

When I first got my '66 eighteen months ago, I was all hung-ho on doing a complete wiring harness change, since much of the little electrical stuff like lights, signals, dash lights, gauge lights, dome light, etc. wasn't working. And the wiring looked confusing, messy in places (mostly under the dash).

I bought the $8.00 wiring diagram book for my year, and studied that. Then I found a great all-in-one wiring diagram online and printed it out poster-size and went to work tracking down all the issues in my own rat's nest, cleaning up as I went.

Little by little as I got everything electrical working and cleaned up, I decided not to purchase a complete wiring kit. In retrospect, I would only do so if I planned to run a lot of extra power/circuits in the truck. I don't. Or maybe on a down to the frame project, I would do it. And I would probably use the one from American Auto Wire, although pricey. But that is my own preference and many people prefer other companies.

What I also did, was focus on the dash wiring cluster, as under the dash is where people tend to splice in stuff to the fuse box. Cleaned that up, made sense of the wiring, made sure colors matched stock (you can buy colored wire- ANY colored wire - of any length and gauge, online, pretty cheap). For instance, if I needed orange wire with a pink stripe 18 gauge - I could purchase 20 feet online, cheap).

Keep in mind that as soon as you invest in one of the after-market kits, in most cases you lose original color-coding of wires and are tied into whatever scheme the after-market manufacturer uses (often Chevy).

You didn't state what or if you have electrical issues other than being messy, but often people want to leap to replacing the entire wiring harness, when it's just a switch or another small cost part to bring things back to life.

Just my thoughts. Damn, I have to get back to work. I took some time off and spent much of it obsessing and working on my truck!

I found Mac's/ Ecklers was a great source for my 1963 f100 longbed with 223 3 speed. Under dash wiring harness 14401 and firewall to engine harness and tail light crossover harness and engine to bed tail light harness. The numbers escape me for now.
My point is I was able to locate everything I needed to restore my wiring back to stock and should have everything working again after a complete failure of engine firewall to dash meltdown/ corrosion/rust-fest.
eBay was the first place I looked and found everyone I needed. Lucky me?
I was thinking of the universal harness too, but didn't think I could pull it off. Lots easier to replace each section with brand new same-same sections.
I also found the 1963 Ford Truck F-100 - F-750 Wiring Diagram Manual for ~$13.

A lot has changed in the 5 years since these guys were chatting about wiring harnesses on this thread. Now you can get just about any of these for any year. A DIY system is still a good choice - especially if you are adding circuits and features but if you want the original look they are plentiful nowadays.

Just thinking out loud here, but I bet the '65 Mustang harness for the sweep speedometer and warning lights w/ 2 speed heater would probably work with little or no modification in a '65/66. Hmmm?? That raises lots of possibilities because NPD sells a pre-made harness with a modern 12 circuit ATC fuse block and spare hot and keyed circuits with all the correct factory ends and color codes. It's not cheap, but if it fits, it would go in with little trouble as all the hard part is done.

Several years ago purchased individual harness thru Mr. Mustang manufactured by American Auto wire, very impressed with the quality, a matter of unplugging the old harness and plug in the replacement, same wire color codes, and connectors. I do not believe Mr. M offers the individual harness and I am not familiar with their current products so I could not make a recommendation but their kits appear to be an upgrade by adding additional circuits and options. There are a few Ford part suppliers and Summit Performance Parts who offer American Autowire and they have their own website. If I were going with any aftermarket kit I would inquire it the kit included the upgraded 'headlight' circuit; if not, ask to swap for the upgrade. Anyhow food for thought?
