I recently rebuilt the carb in my 67 f100 (holley model 1940). It starts and runs well with the choke closed, but I can't get it to hold idle at all. It instantly dies when the choke is about half closed. I tried driving around the block with the choke open just enough so it wouldn't die, and it died 3 or 4 times when I gave it gas. Sometimes it drove fine and reved well, sometimes it wanted to die when I gave it gas. Any ideas what's going on?
The first thing that comes to mind is the Idle mixture. Now I am not familiar with yer exact model but it sounds to me that the idle screws may not be set correctly.
I usually start them out by gentlely screwing them all the way in then back them out 1 1/2 to 2 turns. This usually gets the engine idleing.
If this doesnt work I would suspect that debris is stopping up one of the many small holes in the carb body.
