Call me crazy, but I have a bit of nostalgia for the vehicle I learned to drive a stick shift on. I learned at 15 driving through a field dragging a trailer loaded up with round bales. That was 11 years ago and I just found out that truck is for sale.
I've been looking for some form of camping/hunting/4wd vehicle and think this could fit the bill. Combined with the fact that I've always liked this particular truck really makes me want it. My problem is, I can't nail down a well reasoned value. So what are your suggestions on a fair price? I know the geography changes the value, but I'm still curious. I've always been friends with this family, so I don't want a great deal, just fair to both parties.
So the truck. 1993 f350 7.3 idi with factory turbo, regular cab, 4x4, 5 speed, 101k miles. Decent shape, but lived its life as a farm truck. Since I drove it last something's been dropped on the bed rail so he said $500 extra and a steel flatbed comes with it. I haven't looked at it close recently, so figure typical Pennsylvania rust on a vehicle kept under a pole barn it's whole life.
So what's a fair price? And what (other than cavitation) should I be on the lookout for? I've never owned a diesel, so this would be my first.

1500-4500 depending on condition.with 100k and it's age,it's due for an idi tune up which will run you around a grand.injection pump/injectors/glow plugs/injector install kit/timing set.probably will need new batteries and battery cables and all fluids flushed.you'll want at least 2k ready for maintenance and repairs (that's with you doing the work) ........if you want it reliable.you'll soon see,the 7.3l will be the least of your worries.it's the rest of the truck that will require lots of loving bringing these old gems back from the dead.with the low miles, and high age and it being a farm truck, means she's been sitting a lot.prepare for the truck to start falling apart around you as you bring it back into service.you'll be working on it more than you drive it for a while. whatever you pay for the truck, you'll soon surpass it in costs of parts.there's nothing cheap about a cheap old idi truck.
Being a farm truck I would probably just look up the value of the truck and offer trade in/rough trade in value for it. Probably going to be around 2000 I would imagine.
I didn't think a factory turbo was offered until 94 on the 7.3 so you might want to check out that too, it is most likely an aftermarket turbo kit.

'93 was the first year for the optional turbo for the idi.for the first part of '94 the turbo was still optional for the idi.once the di was introduced mid year of '94 all diesel engines placed in fords came turbocharged since.
however your still correct.it could be an aftermarket turbo in that truck,as most idi trucks that are turbocharged are aftermarket (by a landslide.)
That a lot more than i expected in repairs. They bought it new in 93, and i know they wouldn't have added the turbo, so its either factory or a dealer added, which i understand was also an option.
He wants $5k for it, then an extra $500 for the flatbed (it either needs that or a new box) i know 100k is low for the motor, but probably 80-90k miles had a load on it.
around here, trucks like that sell for inflated prices because they are gobbled up by people who dont actually need a diesel because they never haul heavy and dont actually need a 4x4 because they never go off-road. even so, 5500 and YOU get to do the labour swapping the box and deck ... i dont see it.
That pretty much describes me. I have no need for it, and for hauling, my v10 should be able to run circles around the idi. This would purely be a toy, minor offroading, but i managed to fish and camp etc. out of a Mustang for years
I felt that his asking price was way too high, but that's what kbb is in fair condition. (Edmunds is $3k so who really knows?).
Is $3500 a fair price with a flatbed? I don't want to insult him with what he may view as lowball.
How can anyone figure in all of those 'needed' repairs without seeing the truck? It may have been well kept by the PO… we don't know. Every truck has to stand on it's own merits its… there's no one price fits all.
Regarding the 'optional' turbo… no such thing. There were two different engines offered at on point but there was no 'turbo' option offered… dealer installed or otherwise. Outfits like Banks did offer these kits but none were factory options.
Ad far as the price goes I have seen simlar trucks on CL for $2000-$2500…

It is a PA truck, and it is 21 years old. I would bet it is rusted(hence what the flat bed was put on).
And you are WRONG on the turbo thing. 93 and 94 offered a FACTORY turbo on the 7.3 IDI. I was made for Ford by ATS. It was an OPTION and did not come on all trucks.
Easy way to tell if it was factory or added.
8th vin diget for naturally ape rated IDI was a M. FACTORY turbo was a K
For a guy who supposedly sold these trucks new, you sure don't know much about them!!
here is what aFactory turbo IDI looks like
Post 13 shows it

My 94 idi i just sold for $1100 the core support was completely rust free btw. And my was not that rusty just dented up but also needed a bunch of work. If its not rusty everything works like it should $2500-3500 maybe. Thats the high side
