8.8 Rear
Anyone know how many splines in an 8.8 F-150 rear. My trucks a 96 F-150 axle code 18 which I think is a 3.08. I think Ford made 28 and 31 spline in the 8.8's. The reason for asking is I'm thinking about putting a limited slip from a Mustang,Lincoln,ect. with an 8.8 rear into my truck. Not the whole rear assembly but rather just taking my spider gears out and replacing them with with the limited slip cluth packs. Anyone ever done this or know that it will work? I know some F-150 came with limited slip from the factory and figure the junkyards are pretty plentiful with these parts. Thanks

First to answer your question about the splines, the trucks come with 31 splines. As for the limited slip, the traction lock differential and the full open diff are very different. If I had to guess, aside from the cross pin, the only other parts that could be interchanged is the small spiders, not the ones with the clutches. There is no place in the open carrier for the clutches to fit. And the big spiders are built for the clutches. So long story short, find a complete limited slip diff for a 31 spline 8.8, or don't waste your time. I just rebuilt a trac lok in a 95 f-150, and the kit was only 75 bucks. So if you find an old one for a good price the kit is fairly cheap. This kit came with all the fiber and steel discs, the shims to set the preload on them and the friction modifier to go in the axle with the oil. I hope this helped.
