The plugs on a 4.0 must be a lot easier to get to than a 3.0.
Not really; I would say they're both similar in difficulty, both requiring access through either the wheel wells or from below. The intention with the iridium plugs is so you can spread out the change intervals further, and that's because it is such a difficult job.
I can remove and install the Driver's side spark plugs just standing in front of the van, using a deep socket and ratchet for Number 6, a deep socket with 3" extension and ratchet for Number 5, and a deep socket with 6" extension and ratchet for Number 4, the one I just replaced, which is located behind the a/c compressor.
to reach the passenger side plugs from the front of the van, I remove the air filter box and intake duct, and then I can reach Number 1 and Number 2. Number 3 requires access through the doghouse or through the wheel well.
I've never had to work the spark plugs from under the van.
I am the guy who has run the Iridium plugs, tried other types and the Iridium started like new from the day they were installed until the van died.
So I got 30,000+ before black ice killed the car. Started everyday like the day they were put in. Even in sub zero weather after sitting for several days. Autolite XP605 Iridium XP Spark Plugs fit 1996 4.0L vehicle and many other models. They are pre gapped @ the correct gap. I check every time. Use Antisieze and dielectric grease.
The other thing I did was replace both O2 Sensors, no codes just because they had over 100K. Improvement was like new spark plugs.
Probably the same # for all 4.0 motors, check the Autolite.com site.
Note there are 2 different types street and track. Street is what you want for they last 100,000+ miles or more. Track ones burn out fast.
I love Bertha my current 96 AWD with 34,000 miles. With 4 captains chairs and cocoa interior.
