I Have an 89 F150 4x4 with the Mazda 5 speed. My problem is that as of late when I shift into second gear it grinds sometimes. I've found that if I work the shifter around a little bit and gingerly put it into second sometimes I can avoid the grinding. Everytime this happens it makes me cringe because I know that i'm destroying my transmission. I would just consider myself to be a weekend warrior with just enough knowledge to get myself in trouble. So I guess my question is what the hell is going on? Is there a way to adjust out the clutch on this particular vehicle? Or should I start saving now for a rebuild or new tranny? I bought the truck with 108,000 miles on it and now it has 122,000 as far as I can tell the previous owner took fairly good care of it. Any help you guys can give me will be greatly appreciated.
Sounds like the second gear synchro is going. If you catch it reasonably early, all it will take is a minor rebuild or just synchro replacement. If it ground in all gears I would suspect a sticky clutch, but one gear is usually synchro.
It has been a long time since I had this problem so can't say what it costs to fix now a days.
Thanks for your help Jim. Does anyone else out there happen to have an estimate of what this is going to cost me. Once again any info will be greatly appreciated.
i don't know any numbers, but i know my m5od in my 99 sucks, and i usually either let the motor rpm drop down or rev the motor to the corresponding rpm the trans will be in before i release the clutch pedal in the given gear. when the input and output shafts are spinning at the same speed, it usually slips into gear without noise. not a fix, but a way to tolerate!
Thanks for the tip. I've had some success with that and also double clutching it but invariably it seems to grind at least once or twice on my way to work.
