1973 Ford F600 Help!!

Hi guys, I'm new to this forum but need some quick help. My buddy has a 73 F600 grain truck that he's planning on using for his wedding hayride this Saturday and the darn distributor went out on it. It has the 330ci engine, and we can't find a replacement anywhere. Will any of the distributors from the other size engines fit the 330? The fourth digit of the VIN is a "d" so its the heavy duty 330. Any help would be appreciated. Also on a side note, a local guy has a 1970 (also has a "d" in the fourth digit of the VIN), but the distributor looks different from the outside, I think it has been replaced. Would this distributor fit the 73 model?? Thanks in advance for your help!

Have you tried Napa? They deal with heavy trucks.
On side note I learned a lot about a 330 just searching for you.

Yes, called them yesterday and they don't stock the distributor for the 330, and didn't know if any other distributors would fit it. I think my buddy called Ford and they don't even stock it.

I don't know much about these things, and wasn't there when it quit them, but he was taking it down the road to fill it up with gas and it quit on him. Said it will run all day at idle, but when you get going it cuts out. They took the cap off the distributor and he said the whole thing was loose inside so I guess its getting all out of whack when you get to going down the road. Another idea was a vacuum leak, but I think they checked that.

Welcome to FTE

He needs a new point plate, the nylon bushing between the upper and lower plates has cracked apart, a common problem.

1972: Ford replaced the 1959/71 individual upper & lower plates with a one piece plate assy...that is composed of upper & lower plates with a nylon bushing sandwiched in between.

D2PZ-12151-A (replaced B9AZ-12151-A upper & B9AZ-12151-B lower) .. Point Plate (Motorcraft DB-187) / Should be available from any auto parts store!

Applications: ALL 1959/73 V8: Passenger Cars/Trucks, 1966/73 Bronco & 1969/73 Econoline / Ditto 1974 and later V8's without DuraSpark Electronic Ignition.

Pic: Example of 12151 point plate and the POS 12072 bushing:

Bill,

Will the distributor off of the 70 F600 fit the 73?

Points/Condenser/Rotor/Cap/Primary Wire/Point Plates are the same, just swap the parts.

The 1970 may have the original upper and lower plates, could have the 1972 one piece replacement.

Bill,

One more thing. My buddy said when they took it apart the vacuum advance was worn. He has located all the parts you listed above but can't find a vacuum advance for that engine. Will the vacuum advance interchange from the 70-73, or do you know where to find a new one? Thanks again.

Well we finally got it running Friday afternoon. Ended up replacing the fuel pump and cleaning the carb in addition to rebuilding the distributor. Everyone was definitely glad we went through the extra work, as it was a one of a kind hayride! Bill, thanks so much for all your help!
