slow sometimes non working tailgate window

I would appreciate it if anyone might have information to help me understand why my tailgate window works sometimes and sometimes doesnt, and when it does work it moves slowly as it gets half way down. It is a 95 I just recently bought it and thats all that i have found wrong, but i just like to fix it before it goes out completely. that would suck.I was also wondering if anyone elses windows get scratched as they go up and down on the doors and the tailgate ,because i was gonna get the windows tinted but i figured the tint would just get scratched up and look like **** . thanks

When mine did this, I took the plate off and greased everything real good. It still did it, so I had the window motor replaced. It seemed like a PITA so I paid someone $100 labor to do it. But you can do it yourself. The big thing is to support the back glass while it is extended and yopu are replacing the motor. I already read here of someone who broke their glass this way, and that's way more than the $100 labor I paid to have it done.

My window is not tinted, but it does not seem to scratch. I have stickers on it and they don't get scratched up.

This is a very common problem. My 1990 Bronco does the same thing. THis is caused by the tailgate latches not fully grabbing on to the latches on the truck when you close the gate. Next time it happens, put ALL your weight against the tail gate, then at the same time, have someone turn the key to open the window.

To fix this problem, you must reguarly lubricate all the hinges on the tailgate. You should do this every 2-3 weeks. Just give them a quick spray of Prestone Silicone lubricant or equivalent. Don't use WD-40, it doesn't lubricate at all.

The scratches come from the outer weatherbelt dry-rotting, which also lets dirt build up inside the t/g and that's why they rust out at the bottom all the time. It's a $35 part from Ford or $30 from Jeff's.

The strike bolts can be adjusted so the latches close fully. Look thru the Tailgate Tech album in my signature link - it shows everything you need to know.
