460 won't start. Heard an electric fuel pump running on and on in the back tank, added some gas, no pump sound, but now no start.
Hope the PO was honest with me. Said it was original paint, 77k
Not sure if the '84's are like my former '88 E150 but those did have electric fuel pumps in the tank. Only cost me a $450 tow 125 miles from home one late Sunday night to learn that!
Electric fuel pumps for sure. Heard one running, and assumed that tank was empty, but still not solved the no start issue. Getting it towed today.
Original paint? The seller thinks so. I think it's a good repspray.
The van started right up when I first saw it, but I did not drive it. Seller said it works perfect. When I came to pick it up, it would not start, and he sent me home. Few days later he said he cleaned the dist cap and it runs perfect again. I came up,to get it and it died in 1/2 block. Rear tank pump was running non stop, gauge said 1/4 tank, but would not start again. Put 3 gallons on top, still no start. Having a good mechanic check it out now, before I start throwing parts at it. Need to research the latest on 460 tech, and available pump/tank fixes.
I made enquiries on Friday morning (US Thursday afternoon) and followed-up with a further phone call on Saturday (US Friday). Jerry was kind enough to send me more pics and even provided a video clip (in which we said we wanted to hear the motor run - and it did in the video).
If you got it for $2800 - I don't know whether that's cheap over there but I would have paid that much too.
Obviously you live in California, if you can help me find one, I'm serious about buying an E150 (must be V8 (preferably 5 litre)) in similar condition as your E250 (and preferably running).
It would need to be sent from LA to Sydney, Oz.
Hope this van doesn't cost you too much time and $$'s to get it running again.
O.k.- get a 2gal gas tank, 3/8" fuel line long enough to reach from the 2gal tank to the to of your carb., put an small electric fuel pump in the middle of that fuel line,. Extra luxury if the electric connectors could have aliagator clips. Quick disconnect.
That will help you isolated that. Its a great set-up for emergency road side get ya home. Road tested, hope this helps
Ok, had my good mechanic look it over...
He found a "bad connection to the fuel pump relay", dialed that in, and sent me home. Said the rear pump was noisy, and may fail soon.
It did, next day. Starts on front tank no problem, switch to rear and runs out of gas in 60 seconds.
So filled the front tank, and drove 35 miles to work. Then thirty five home and right to the smog test while hot.
Car stalled in the bay, and no restart. Plenty of cranking, but no start. Shot of brake cleaner, and rumbles to life. Then runs out of gas.
Has a fuel pump override button on the dash.....is this an oil pressure work around? Hit the button and you can hear the pumps.
So going to have to go through the tanks, filters and pumps I guess.
Thanks, ET
