Steering Wheel Controls
I've been having trouble with the up volume control button and just figured out what the problem is.
When I press the button sometimes the nav unit will seek (go to the next higher pre-programed radio station) instead of turning the volume up or the volume will start going up and continue even after I release the button.
I'm right handed and when I turn the truck I use the palm/heel of my hand, which so happens is usually placed right next to the buttons. I just noticed my hand rubbing against the button as I turned. When I took a closer look, the buttons they are actually shiny where my hand has been rubbing them. I think that pushed the button out of alignment over time.
Just wanted to get this out there in hopes that others can avoid this. issue.

I will disagree with this only because I had the same issue!!! I thought the same thing too when I encountered this problem. Let me guess, one or a couple of times you press volume up on purpose or by accident and it "maxes" the volume and then you have no "up" control on the steering wheel but can still change on on the actual stereo? You most likely have a code in the truck for it. But wait it gets better. Oh wait. Your stereo is most likely the culprit. I have had two of the steering wheel switches replaced under warranty, and only 2 days ago when the Ford SMT came over and hooked up his computer did we find the code for the actual stereo. He said that he would bet all of his education that the stereo was the problem for me which is why I keep going through steering wheel switches. Get it checked out brother!
Thanks Matt, I'll get it checked out.
An interesting thing is that this was happening with the base/factory stereo, but I upgraded to a new navigation unit and it is still doing it.
Another interesting thing is that if I press the volume down button first, the volume up seems to work correctly. Guess this is why I thought that I had physically mis-aligned or damaged the switch. Assumed by pressing the down button first it aligned the up button (since they are a part of the same rocker switch).
Thanks for your input.

Hey gang,
Keep in mind that I'm here to help, too. If you need me to step in and assist after you've been to the dealership, just send a PM my way. All I'll need is your full name, best daytime phone number, VIN, current mileage, and servicing dealership.

Keep in mind that a lot of those buttons are a single circuit. Pressing the buttons changes the resistance the SCCM sees. So if you do not push them firmly the SCCM may see the wrong resistance and do the wrong thing. A lot of times I push the vol + I get seek + because the resistance is only 90 ohm different between the two.
Lovely, this brings me back to why I don't like fly by wire systems. A single piece of wire controls what the computer thinks you want to do.
Sgt93-Steve - Are you gonna have the dealer take a look at it? Didn't it start out small the last time, and then you ended up with a Jeep?

Crystal, I will have the mech look at it when I bring it in for an oil change. Thanks though. This issue has been around for quite some time. Since my 2011 at least.
Darren, press it hard, soft, stroke it, look at it wrong, it still does it. I shouldn't have to treat it like a newborn baby; it's a button. Ford needs to correct the issue, as I know I'm not the only one who reported it 4 years ago. I'm not losing sleep over it though. Even on. 70k+ truck.
Dak, if believe you are correct. It started with the steering wheel control, or maybe one of the NOX issues.

All I am saying is that it is caused by the way the system is designed. It is a switch and if it does not make proper contact the SCCM will see the wrong resistance and do the wrong thing. That is why pressing vol+ and getting seek+ is the most common (close on resistance), but not the only thing that can happen. There is no fix for it ...... they can look at it all they like.
Unless you have something out to lunch like Tofan (where the system does something it should not) it is the way it is.
If you push any of the 5 buttons and it does one of the other 4 functions it is caused by the SCCM getting the wrong resistance value.
After 4+ years mine is actually pretty good now and hardly ever does it. It used to do it quite often. Sooooo, IDK, just push the buttons like hell and break them in and you will be fine

D, mine only does it when a good damn song is on and I am trying to crank the volume ROR. It actually just started doing it maybe a week or so ago. I press the button the same way. Something Ford needs to get right this decade for sure.
After I got it out, I blew it out with one of those cans of compressed air and then used a Q-tip with some circuit cleaner ( I used CRC 2-26) to clean off the connector pins you can see inside the switch housing.
I put it all back together and, so far, the volume & seek buttons are behaving - but, as I said, this has been sporadic. So, we'll see.
Yeah, mine has been doing this sporadically for the last few months - it's really aggravating. Today, I removed the switch - if you're careful, you can pry up one edge with your thumbnail and then pop it out. Disconnect the wire connector (make sure you don't let it fall down into the steering wheel).

How many miles you got on the truck? And you are already having steering wheel control issues?
