Average life expectancy of a stock 6.4L?

Hey all, I currently own a 6.0L and am looking at an 08 6.4L with 130,000 on the odometer.....if the truck has been well maintained how long before I could expect problems if I continue to stay stock and maintain it well? Thanks for any input.

Thanks for the reply....what, if any are the inherent problems with the 6.4L? are they at all as problematic as the 6.0L is for some. Although my 6.0 has been great to me I would rather not buy into somebody elses problems with this 6.4 if I could avoid it so I am asking all the questions I can before I take the plunge.

radiators on anything 2008 and up may leak. The end caps are all plastic now.

Aftermarket radiators are available.

Coolant checks for nitrite levels need to be performed on occasion.

Still need to use oem fuel and oil filters.

Idler pullys seem to be an issue as a wear item. You notice a sqeak and then it gets progressively worse. Plenty of time to change it when it starts.

The emissions is something that you have to learn about. This is the big item that may effect your choice for the motor.

This is not a motor for in town driving on a regular basis. As a hwy and towing motor it works well with the emissions. but in town driving will naturally produce more soot and then the DPF needs to clean it. The dpf cleaning really needs to be done on the hwy to do it right. So if always in town that maybe an issue.

At 130,000 miles with the original DPF is a concern for me. I believe Ford specs the DPF to be "baked clean" at 100,000 miles. If the DPF is reaching the end of it's useful life, you can expect frequent regens. City driving is not recommended.

EGR and EGR coolers especially with a lot of idle hours.

Thanks for the info people.....so you all are saying the 6.4 is not really a marked improvement over the 6.0 in terms of cost to operate? and at 130,000 miles stock I could very well be buying someone elses head aches?
One other question that seems hard to nail down is what should one expect to pay for an 08 6.4 regular cab long bed F350 XLT in average condition? looking on line the prices vary widely.........This one has an asking price of $19,500 which seem like a lot with that kind of mileage. Oh, and it has plowed.

I'll try to link you to the dealer add......http://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-s...ngId=380490703

Truck looks pretty good. I see he put an aftermarket trailer brake controller on it. Which I ok, just interesting that he didn't go with the factory TBC.

I don't think that was much of a plow truck. Seems very clean.

Looks well maintained.

It does look good but....as we all know pictures can hide a lot of flaws and I agree the trailer brake controller seems out of place on that truck. I'm about 200 miles from the truck so it's a bit of a stretch to drive there just for a look because I'm switching back and forth on rather or not I want a second diesel to maintain or just get a gasser for work, that's what I'll be using it for so it will be my daily driver. I'm going to call them and try to get the PO's name so I can contact them. I'll go from there, thanks again for the input people, it helps with a decision making.

I found this one and it looks more like what I may be after for my work truck, the only down side is it is twice as far away so traveling to look at it is out of the question. I have contacted them for pics of the undercarriage though, the condition of that will help me decide what to do.

Oops looks like this one is gone.

Yeah, I'd want an oasis report from Ford too before I would consider it..although I've had many vehicles in my life and don't recall ever doing my service work at the dealer, I always have done my own, but an oasis would tell if anything major was done to it while still under warranty I assume.

Personally, I probably would avoid purchasing a 100K mile 6.4 without maintenance records. Receipts at least.

There's also a lot of maintenance that a lot of people wouldn't do on their own. Coolant & trans flush are examples. If you go look at it, at least take some coolant test strips to test the coolant nitrites.

I just happened to be looking at trucks last night and was curious what a 120K-130K 6.4L was going for, found one with around 135K ext. cab for $17K at a dealer, carfax showed religious oil and fuel filter changes. I think $19K+ for a reg cab is WAY too high.

I agree it's a lot for a 130,000 mile truck especially on 08
