Timing Problems

Ok here's the deal.I've got a rebuilt 5.0 that is sluggish and eating gas.I advanced the timing to 20 degrees initial(spout out) and it's not pinging, but I did'nt think you could run that much initial timing without it pinging.I ran the #1 cylinder to TDC and the balancer was close to 0,maybe 3 or 4 degrees off.I set it to zero and checked the rotor,it is past the number one terminlal, which I think it should be because it's firing 20 degrees before TDC.Now I have a buddy who says the distributor could be off a tooth. But I don't see what difference that can make as long as you can adjust the base so it's firing in the timing range of 10-20 degrees before TDC.I'm wondering if maybe the machine shop that built the motor put the timing chain on retarded or off a tooth.I know on some timing sets you have 3 keyways, one 4 degrees advance,4 degrees retarded and center or o.Any ideas? The truck acts like the timing is retarded,no power bad mileage.

Timing Problems

The Timing should be set at 10 degrees...but in order to do that you will need to remove a little like plug looking thing on the wire going to the Distributor the little plug is on a wire that comes right off a the distributor wire. remove that and then set your timing and go from there. b/c i checked my timing on my '90 5.0
before removeing that and it said that was at about 17 degrees. and when removed i was at eight.so check that.. Ryan
