Very nice Im watching this build with interest. Waiting to see how you address the newer open knuckle front end into this thing. Or Dana High pinion axle.

Thanks. Im super busy with this classic Ford truck disease. Picking up a 77 F250 4x4 tomorrow - not highboy - but complete truck with power steering, power brakes, etc. Body is beat, so its a parts truck, hint hint. So far it looks like the front drive shaft ,might be too close for comfort to the rear engine / trans crossmember but we'll see...I don't want to get into lift blocks between springs and axle. Wanna keep it close to stock height as possible. Stay tuned!!

Staying tuned. I had planned to go with some late 60s to early 70s axles for my 63 to get the gear ratio to a little more livable number. 4:56 is a little to deep for my liking. I will power assist break it with a dual pot and keep the adj up on the shoes. My 65 with a complete break job had plenty of stopping power. I changed all rubber lines as over the years they will swell closed. Cut one open sometime and see what I mean. Most will be smaller than the size of a BB. Not to good for stopping power.

Mock Ups Begin

Finally got around to mock up assembly testing fit of updated axles, new springs, etc. So far I am thrilled with how everything is coming together. After much deliberation, Im going forward with a Dana44 High Pinion in the front which has disc brakes. Power steering (so far) is also late 77 from my donor truck I ended up parting out. Anyway, its starting to go back together, now I need to go back to work and shake the money tree...

A 64 with anti sway bar...Is it a first? LOL

Rear springs waiting to mate up to the 77 Dana 60 after I cut and weld new spring perches (narrow frame on 64)

Setting up to tack weld new perches for test fit

New perches tack welded to accommodate the narrower 64 frame rails. Axle is from late 77 truck.

Have you considered the NP205 instead of the Dana 24? Bolt for bolt replacement if you find the correct Ford driver's drop divorced model. It's a good bit stronger than the Dana 24 (not that you'd break the Dana...) and parts are a bit more readily available. Seems like a good upgrade with the other changes you are making.

Yes, I was reading your mind...

Yeah, Ive been kicking that around but considering the low horsepower 292 Im putting back in the truck (for now) Im going to do an overhaul on the D24 and stick with it while hunting for another 292 to build. Plus Ive got the 3:54 gears now so Id probably stall the engine before breaking anything..lol. I like the Y-block and it can be built to reasonable power. Once I do that I may go with the NP. Thanks for the thought though...wait...did you already know I would say that?

Late to the party, just subscribed. I've been wanting to do an axle swap to mine. Been looking for a donor truck myself. Can't wait to see how yours turns out.

This thread is great! My dad passed away recently and his (and my) favorite rigs were the 1964-1966 Ford 4x4 trucks. I'm going to start restoring one myself over the winter. Good luck on your build and looking forward to following your journey

Thanks Matt. Just getting back in the garage after a long absence. Hopefully by the end of October I'll have some updates with more photos. If all works out I'll have transfer case in and drive shafts mated so I can check clearances. Also just got my cab out of storage so I can put that on frame temporarily to check all fits and finish most of the mechanicals before I blast the cab.
