I have a 77 f250 with the 400 in it. I've been having some trouble with it running properly at highway speeds once the engine is warm. It starts sputtering and spitting. It will idle but once you give it any fuel it will stall out and sometimes die. I've replace a ton of stuff trying g to solve the problem but unable to fix. Any and all suggestions are welcome. I've replaced the fuel pump and filters, the ignition switch on the dash and the ignition module and still no luck.
It sounds like the engine is running out of fuel, but you've done the first steps to address that. So we need to do some diagnostics and ask some questions. When it dies will it start again immediately and idle? If so, it is probably fuel-related. If it has to cool down it is probably ignition related.
So, start it and run it until it dies. Then try to start it again. If it doesn't start pull the air cleaner and open the throttle while looking down the carb's throat. Do you see two streams of gas? If so, it may not be fuel. Pull the coil wire out of the distributor and lay it close to something that is grounded and crank the engine. Do you have a blue or white spark?
It will generally start back up and idle. And it will idle all day long but if you try to give it any fuel either fast or ease into it it will stall but not always die. Once you let up off the peddle it will go back idle. And generally by the time I can get the hood up and crawl up to look at it it will Rev up and down properly.
My fuel tank has been relocated to under the bed on the drivers side. I'm not sure if there is a tank filter in it or not. I also have a duel tank setup but only one tank.
Sounds like a fuel issue, and probably a restriction in the fuel line. However, if the accelerator pump isn't working it can do this. So, with the engine off pull the air cleaner and look down the throat while hitting the throttle. You should see two good streams of gas. If not, the accelerator pump isn't working and a lean cruise mix might not let the engine make the transition to cruise w/o the pump.
