Clutch fan

I have a 2001 f250 with a 7.3. Can anyone explain the operation of the clutch fans on these trucks. Sometimes when pulling my camper and the truck downshifts it will roar like a sob. Other times I will hear it but like it is an electric fan. Then there are times you hear it and then the noise goes away. Can this fan be heat operated. Any advice would be appreciated. Micky

Thats the whole idea of the clutch fan, it has a temperture spring on the front of the fan and as it heats up the spring winds up and tightens the clutch allowing the fan to turn maximum. that why you here the roar after a long drive with the a/c on or just the heat coming off the radiator, then it disengages and runs normal.

My new 2014 roars on cold start ups, It sometimes runs for ten miles or so I hate it. I found that if I put tha peddal to the floor for 5 seconds or so it stops. Dosent do it all the time, but most of the time. Shouldnt it only run if its hot?
