I am wondering if the guy hydrolocked the engine. Would the truck still turn over if it was hydrolocked?
Depends on how much damage was done. You can have moisture in the egr and still have the engine run, providing the egr cooler leak isn't too bad. Once it splits and starts to "pour" coolant into the intake, you can bend connecting rods, push rods, pretty easily.
IMO, I'd carefully see if it turns over anyways. Not much to lose if it's lunched. If it does turn over, You might connect up diagnostics if possible to measure IPR % and ICP psi in case the issue is a crank, but no start problem.
You might try taking the glow plugs out first. Won't bend stuff then if it is full of water. Don't look in the holes when cranking. High press. liquid can injure or kill.
Just something else to keep in the back of your mind, it can hydrolock, then the the fuel or coolant can leak by the rings if it sits a while. Then it may turn over some and lock again. Not saying I suspect that's gonna happen, just that it could. If it turns over some and then stops don't keep trying, pull glow plugs as mentioned above. If fuel comes out of a hole pull injector for that cylinder and inspect for it to be leaking or broken. if you get coolant, pull EGR valve and check for coolant there (if it doesn't have an EGR delete), if it's dry suspect heads/gaskets and wet leads back to EGR cooler.
Good luck! This could be an awesome deal for you if the engine turns out to be repairable.
Being an 05' it could also have a failed stc fitting. Around a $60 part to fix. That wouldn't account for loosing fluid but is a somewhat common thing that will cause a no start.
