Can anyone recommend a good tonneau cover? I've been looking in the Summit catalog, and they seem to have a few different styles :
- Snap down
- Zip up (Eg: Frame sits inside the box - no drilling)
- Hatch back (Eg: solid cover that you lift up - would like to know how sturdy it is)
As always, any opinions would be very appreciated.
The cloth or leather tonneau's shrink up or tear kinda easy. My buddy has one on his Dodge that is fiberglass and it holds up great, he abuses it some, but nothing really bad. It is nice so that when you park, you can crawl inside and shut the cover making it a great tent. I use my bed to much to ever get one, but if used only sometimes, it would be an investment that I would make. The fiberglass ones are more expensive, but they don't tear or get destroyed as easy, so in the end I think its cheaper. Hope this is the kind of info you were looking for.
I used to have a hard tonneau on my 90, but after ten years, the hinges broke and punched a hole in my cab. Modern hinges, however, dont do that, they are one-piece across the bed unlike my "vintage" ones.
Right now i have a clamped frame el-cheapo cover, and it is great. Can take it off easily, and it rolls right up, and saves a lot on the mileage.
I did like my hard one better because 1). it was lockable, and 2). becase it could carry snow on top during the winter and keep weight over the rears.
