Jasper, Engine & Trans.

I have a 1995 F-250 super Cab XLT.
The body is not in immaculate condition, but needs to re-painted. I talk to my mechanic, He gave me a quote of $7812.50 on the nose for a new Jasper Motor, Trans. and Brand New Radiator. He said for another $550.00 bucks he would replace the front disks and rotors and rear brake drums and brakes. Then he would also repair the rear end. It's a non slip rear end.
I got a quote for about $1500, bucks to re-paint the truck and the camper shell .

Any thoughts. I have 210,000 original miles on the motor, and about 75,000 on the trans. I would halve to look for my receipt for the trans. to be exact.
Any thoughts, I could buy used truck that's newer, but I think I would be buying some one else's problem's. Or buy new for about $45,000.00 plus, then have a big payment and then the expense of the add on crap, Camper Shell, Bed liner ,

95 F-250 Super Cab XLT "460" 7.5L V-8 Gas,E4OD Trans. 8ft.Bed

find a used 460,swap it in next weekend with a buddy and be one with it for less than a grand.you can handle the brakes.if the rear is shot, just replace it.couple hundred bucks for the common used sterling 10.25
if you can't wrench,it's time to learn or make payments but new trucks require wrenching as well and those parts just costs a whole lot more.

no one rides for free i understand but, before i tossed $9,862.50 at a high mile gas (hog) truck,id buy a used diesel truck first.

i am curious though, why get a quote for engine and trans if the trans was just reman 75k ago? what's the story on that?

I had asked a shop close to my house, and they wanted $7500.00 just to R&R the motor. The motor has 210,000 on it it's leaking oil all the time. and at low speed it has a knock in it, or it's starting to knock. the trans seems to slip when towing. It's 2 yrs. past Jaspers Warranty.
I went and looked at some used f-350's and an F-450 both were diesel, and they were both 2012 models. But I did not want to spend $45,000.00 for someone else's problems. This was at a CarMax lot. I also looked at a Jeep at the Car Max lot, could buy a brand new Jeep Wrangler with 5miles on the odometer from the Chrysler/Jeep dealer for 2500.00 bucks less than at CarMax. The Jeep at the Car Max lot was a 2011 model, all deck out with crap. and 112,000 miles on it. They want $32,000.00 for it.

I think so also, but I don't want a monthly Payment, when I can pay for it with cash. The truck doesn't really need to be painted but it's starting to go bad, what do you expect from a 20 yr old vehicle.

I could probably wait on the trans. I found my receipt for the Trans, it has exactly 89313.6 miles on it. Last time we went to Reno it seemed to be looking for gears on Dead Man's Summit in the Sierras, south of Bridgeport Ca. 10,000 ft. climb. we were not pulling our cargo trailer, but the truck was loaded down.

I have too much blood in my caffeine system

I'd keep the 10k and just buy a new used 2k truck. I paid 1300 for my 88 4.5 years ago. No major work only left me stranded twice fixed it myself on the side of the road both times.

In 10 years you probably won't even spend all 10k including repairs and could have a few junkers sitting around for parts.

Sounds to me like a truck that belongs in the scrap yard. If your ready to drop over $8k on repairs, you can afford a replacement truck.

For that money you can get a fairly low mileage, clean body and interior 4x4 F250 Powerstroke:

1996 Ford F-250 XLT 7.3L Power Stoke Turbo Diesel 4x4 F250 7.3

Or if you want a gas locally:

1997 Ford F250 4x4

And that is less than your new motor and trans...

I wouldn't sink that much money into it unless I was planning on keeping it FOREVER.

I would love to buy a brand new truck. but the the way the economy is today in this country, I do not want to be stuck with a payment. For less than 10,000 buck. I can fix my truck and keep it another 20 years. It will out last me. (I hope)

$10,000 budget will be a lot of truck around here. New, no. But, Ford trucks with less than 100k miles are frequently on craigslist here. Then again though, they wouldn't have a brand new drivetrain either.
