239 flathead compression?

239 flathead compression?

I am in the process of checking compression on my engine. The plugs are out and the accelerator is down. What number should I get? I can't seem to find It in my books.

This is what I am getting:
Cylinder #1: 125#
Cylinder #2: 130#
Cylinder #3: 125#
Cylinder #4: 117.5#
Cylinder #5: 105#
Cylinder #6: 100#
Cylinder #7: 100#
Cylinder #8: 97.5#

The spec is hidden in the Spec section of the WSM, see below.

Anything over a hundred is good. The variance from highest to lowest is not good, tho. Is it possible the lower numbers are the last ones you checked, and the battery was just getting weaker as you went along?

They were the last ones and I started the test wrong the first time (all the plugs were not out) I'll have top do that side over once the battery is back up

At least that isn't the source of the trouble. I'm starting to wonder if 4psi just isn't enough fuel.

90% of carb problems are ignition problems....

As I recall, you have a Bubba dizzy with mech advance only? Is the (-) terminal on the coil connected to the points/electronic ignition module? (+) should be battery voltage. Are you running points with a ballast resistor? Pertronics?

If your engine is essentially stock, the 4-barrel may just be too much carb for it, although I'd be surprised. An air/fuel meter would be a big help here. Try adding a couple degrees more advance.

The only wire from the distributor goes to the negative side of the coil. I am running whatever Bubba puts in the unit but not sure what. Assuming points. I have not added a pertronics but if it will help I will.

Do you have a ballast resistor in the wire to the coil (+) terminal? Have you checked the points? The condenser is always suspect on any poor-running situation. You are 12v, right?

It appears there is a resistor (porcelain looking thing on the firewall). I have not checked the points or condenser since it was a new unit. I'm not even sure where the condenser is. There is no canister on the side. I'm assuming it is inside? Yes it is 12V

Can't hurt to take a look inside, I'd assume Bubba set the points and used a good condenser, but something could have good bad.

Back to the carb, does the accel pump squirt immediately when the throttle is moved, even a small amount?

PS is the PCV still disconnected?

Yes as soon as I move it. I noticed that when I give it allot of throttle (not in gear) the secondary throttle plates don't move.

Yes pcv is disconnected

To be clear the hose is out and both ends are capped
