So my course load this semester is very heavy (as if I haven't complained to you guys before about this) because 4 of my 6 classes have term projects that make up 20-30% of our grade.
One of those 4 classes is my Senior Design Seminar which is basically a course that gets us into groups and solidifies what we want to do for our project. We will then build it in our final semester. (FINAL SEMESTER!!! )
I have been kicking around some ideas briefly and by briefly i mean like this morning/2 hours ago.
1) Suspension setup of some sort(4 link, coil conversion, air ride)
2) Flow bench for injectors.
3) Gearbox or ?Locker?
Anyway, just spit-ballin ideas at the moment, but I always get the brain juices flowin' when I read stuff on here. This literally can be anything we want.. and we get to pair up with 1-4 other members of any engineering focus.
Happy Wed! Easyyyy day of my schedule today. Done by 7!
When I was in Senior Design there was a list of projects to choose from. We had to give our top 3 choices and the professor set the groups and who did what project. The projects were from companies and they gave us a budget. It was really cool that its set up that way. You get to work on real problems for a change.
We designed and built a fatigue tester for wire used in the military and medical fields. Our machine cut testing time by up to 95% (depending which setting you used). They budgeted us $10,000, but we only used about $5600 if I remember correctly.
Good luck with your classes and projects this semester. I don't miss school yet, lol. If think of any ideas I'll let you know.
Wow you guys have it easy. Our project was chosen and given to us. The entire class more or less competed for the best design. Guess it was different then... Of course, there were only about 20 of us
I see quite a few young engineers being defined by their senior projects these days. If you think there's a particular aspect of your area you are interested in, you should pick a project which dovetails into that. It makes you look much better to your perspective employers.
My project was chosen for me as well, I just had some say in it. I didn't get my top choice. My senior design project has nothing to do with what I do now.
A similar design, although not completely divorced, was implemented in F1 this year. Basically, the turbine shaft was wound with a coil of wire. The turbine housing was a big magnet. During breaking, the turbine was used to create electrical energy which was then used to "pre-spin" the compressor during acceleration. They claimed to have almost completely removed turbo lag.
As a side note, I just thought of a relatively cool project:
You could design a VGT setup for our trucks. Size the turbo, pick a micro-controller, design the control strategy, and implement. I'd imagine pedal POS, Boost, and engine speed should characterize one quite nicely. Could even have a brake mode which keeps the VGT closed down tight
