new here,so here goes,I own a 1983 F-150 8 foot bed 300 six
now tell me how to turn it into a dump truck.
with modifications to the engine and susspension.
allright,it is hard to always find the right words,
As a home owner looking to use my existing 150 pick up ,w/ the 8ft bed,What options do i have from you all,if i wanted to dump a load.Either discuss a trailer,or modifying the truck and it's bed.
I know of 6=8,and i could grasp the suspenion concepts,I just dont know about making it dump somthing.
please try to be serious ,Iknow how difficult that can be.
As i descibed in the workshop forum,I want info on what dumping is all about. I own a '83 f150 and love it.
If i was considering modifying it to dump,or tow a trailer that dumps, what would I have spend ?Where do i go shopping ?
I know of 6=8,and have some understanding of suspension upgrades but mostly I want to know what has already been done by you guys.Keep in mind this is for private use and not really a heavy duty idea.Send me pics of your setup.
Even 1 ton is too much to dump from a 1/2-ton truck's bed, so shop for a trailer. I think AWDirect sells dump bed conversions, but probably only for 1-ton & heavier trucks.
you can alway go to some old auction sale and get an old flat deck that doesn't run with a dump bed and do frankenstien thing to the 2 beds, then spend about $3000 on the truck to make more power (like intake exhaust, carb, cam, maybe a set of 4.10/3.73 gears for the rear, and stronger springs. Ohe yeah what tranny do you have?
i've seen people take straight frames off of a motorhome, cut the frame behind the cab, then bolt the straight frame onto the stubs of the old frame with some BIG grade 8 / L9 bolts. (like 5/8" or so). but i wouldn't do that if the rear frame was still good.
look at trucks tv web site at www.truckstv.com they did a dump bed on a 93 or so f150. they may have what was used to build the truck. if i remember righty it was a complete dump bed kit.
I think this truck has a C-3 tranny,3 speed auto.
I dont know if its rated at 1/2 or 1 full ton but it is the 8 foot bed and has carried it share of wieght before.BUT it never dumpped !
I followed two lnks but to nowhere.
I want to see a kit or insert. I like a trailer i saw.It has two axles. It has its own brakes. It dumps for $5,000.00.
But i will have to tow it with my 150 strugling wont i ?
I figured out that if i borrowed $5,000.00 and put down on the trailer,i could use a few grand to soup up the 150's towing.
I would trade the dumping of the 8 ft bed on the truck for torque enough to pull a trailer that does dump!
I should mention my mustang,It's modified,351 clevland,9 in rear,
C-3 tranny too i think,POINT is i could use it to pull my trailer before i'd use my truck, but you guys would not want to see that would yas? Also the stang would probly fall apart pulling right ?
After all it is a 1967 stang and i dont want to put it to work ever.
I would like to make enough cash on the side with my truck and trailer to keep the stang rolling. It too 's been sitting too long.
keep posting about dumping though pleASE !stay focused.
With the 300 I6 you can darn near pull a house down with the Stock power of the 6. It'll fall more in what gears ya got in the rear on the ease of pulling it'll do. I'll Swap the 400M's in my 2 4x4's for a I6 anyday.
after looking at that for a split sec i came here to type about it.
i am going back for another look. I gotta have that hook up.
just to see it dump with a stock body would be incredible.
if i told themi was planning to use that on my f150 would they let me or laugh.i mean the rest of my truck would have to be ugraded too right ?
could this have been done before on a1983 f150 w/ I6 and 8 ft bed?
As for details about the gritty on my truck, It would be a STOCK truck except its got no emission controls to speak of.everything but the new plastic gas tank ,that wont VENT properly, is factory. it has seen better days, its "Ford engine BLUE" w/ the white stripe down the side.the engine needs a new truck.
Will the new dump body let us Tow Too !?
find out ! keep reading.

what gears do i have and what will i have and WHY would i change em (if i didnt have to i mean).in fact i thought these gears were always kinda short and there are only 3. i would rather leave it for i dont want a higher cruising speed now right,if i'm gonna make it a dumper.or is there a better like four speed tranny i should know about?
If you really want to get the nitty gritty on what mods you will need to make to your truck to make it a dumper, go to a local and REPUTABLE 4x4 shop. They are in the business of modifying trucks and jeeps for heavy duty use and abuse. Tell then what you want and they should be able to tell you what it will take without hesitation. If they hmmm and hawww around, find another shop.
GOOD LUCK!
If your truck is stock you can look on the door jamb and get the gear's your truck has. You won't have to swap to a 4spd tranny. Just load steaper gears in the rear end to get more pull, You'll loose cruise speed by doing this. if The truck is only gonna be used as a work horse you can stuff 4.11's in the rear and gain all the pulling power you'll ever need, Plus it'll take alot of strain off the auto tranny while pulling heavy loads. By no means are 4.11's a good highway gear. my 78 1/2ton 4x4 has 4.11's front and rear i do things in 2high and 4high with ease compaird to most I know locking into 4low.
that dump bed kit is compatable to all fullsize trucks, i watched one not long ago on TV being installed on a F150 shortbed.
