shortened story. everything has been replaced( ignition system) tdc rotor pointing at no. 1 piston. 10 degrees btdc. runs ok. i turned the distributor one tooth to the left and the motor runs better , but theres no reading on the damper its like 30 btdc. i moved from 5000 above sea level to level. my 82 full size bronco ran like a rapped ape. would keep up with a camaro no problem. couple days later it wasnt as good. fouled plug.... adjusted carb. all adjustments made.replacements done. its acts like the timing is not retarded as it should be . WHY WOULD IT RUN BETTER WHEN TDC AND 1ST PISTON NOT LINED UP TOGETHER. Im almost ready to get a blazer!!! THATS BAD.
You didn't do anything to the pistons or TDC - you only changed the direction that the distributor has to face to get the ignition timing right. You don't need to pull the distributor; just loosen the clamp bolt and turn it slightly while watching the timing mark under a timing light. Follow the tune-up procedure printed on the emissions sticker (with the vacuum map).
thanks for your reply. i had replaced the distributor a few weeks ago and i wanted to check to make sure is was in the right position. i discovered the problem today, thank god. as i was suspecting the balancer was either installed (off) or the thing slipped out of place, i ran it ( trial and error). on the dial it shows 19 btdc . thats where it runs the best. i still dont have the power i did before but i did change the metering rods and jets because my carb was dumping to much gas ( edelbrock 1406 ). i also may have a small vac. leak somewhere . cant tell yet i need to check the vac. first i need to find what it should be, but for now it halls *** pretty well.
