Help me diagnose my timing issue.

5.4 3v with 110K. I know that the cam phasers are a known issue on these engines with higher miles. Here are my symptoms:

1) engine runs rough with a "kachunk kachunk" kind of noise.
2) engine temp is at normal.
3) have been dealing with the issue by running the A/C or defroster. This adds rpm therefor additional oil pressure.
4) the hotter the ambient air temperature the worse the affect.
5) to correct the affect must place truck in neutral and rev the engine beyond 2K rpm. Then it goes away.
6) just changed the oil with the standard 5w20 and it has gotten worse.

This sounds like an oil pressure issue rather than a cam phaser VCT solenoid issue. Maybe a chain tensioner issue? Thanks for the input and yes I have already done a search, but I did not find symptoms list. If there is a thread, enlighten me.

That oil pressure gauge on the dash is not accurate. It reads in the normal position if the oil pressure is anywhere above 7 PSI, I believe. To get a real reading, you'll need to hook up a mechanical oil pressure gauge in where the stock sending unit is and take a reading when hot, at idle. Oil pressure needs to be 25 PSI or higher. As a reference, my 2007 runs about 26 PSI hot after a good drive on a 100 degree day.

You might have a chain tensioner seal leaking bleeding off some oil pressure. Also some 2007 engines had bad thrust bearings which cause the crankshaft to walk and loose oil pressure. Like 07f150 said you need to measure the oil pressure with a real gauge. Ford has updated the VCT solenoids to correct the rattle noise if everything else checks out ok. The part number is in my signature.

Another question. What is the rpm supposed to be at idle, hot and in drive? 500 rpm seems a bit low for a v8 ford.

Hot, in drive, at idle, mine is about 625 RPMs or so.
