hubcap install?
This shouldn't be so difficult.... Any install tips on hubcaps? I am using a mid-sized rubber mallet and I just can't seem to get the hubcaps seated. I am trying to be patient but right when I seem to get it started it pops all the way off. I know they're the right size as I just took them off a couple days ago to clean and paint.
It shouldn't be so difficult and I feel like a klutz for having to ask.
Thanks
The problem I was having, and you may be having, is I was too worried about denting the caps. Think about how much force you had to use to pop them off (yet they didn't dent or bend), and it's going to take a similar amount to get them back on.
I guess the trick is to hit it as hard as you can. But seriously, I had no idea it would be that much work.
What worked the best for me was to put my feet at 9 and 3 and then hit it hard at 12 and 6. I think a bigger rubber mallet would have been better.
Wheel covers can be difficult to install while hub caps are EZ to install.
The wheel covers on your truck are specific to Explorers only...which your truck is.
I wish the truck was a real Explorer, but the VIN says otherwise. I think the bed may actually be from a real Explorer, as the Explorer nameplate is the correct style to match the package.
I posted a before and after pic in my gallery. Photos don't do it justice as far as how dirty it was before. I only painted the center cap because after cleaning up the parts that should be argent or black I found it to be pretty nice chrome. Why mess with something smooth and shiny. At least I will try it for a while.
These wheel covers are heavy. An interesting mix of metal and plastic.
From what I have read on here, these are not Explorer wheel covers, and are most likely from a 1973 or later version because the center caps are not Explorer caps....but someone will chime in if I read wrong.
There are 7 different versions of TYPE 6 F100/150 Explorer wheel covers. One has to look close to tell one from another, especially after 35+ years have passed by:
D2TZ-1130-A .. 1972/74 F100 - 5 argent depressions / D5TZ-1130-A .. 1975/77 F100/150 - 5 gold depressions / D5TZ-1130-B .. 1975/77 F100/150 - 5 black depressions.
D7TZ-1130-F .. 1977/79 F100/150 - 5 black depressions / D7TZ-1130-G .. 1977/79 F100/150 - 5 red depressions / D7TZ-1130-H .. 1977/79 F100/150 - 5 tan depressions.
D7TZ-1130-J .. 1977/79 F100/150 - 5 white depressions.
The wheel covers I have were argent. There wasn't much paint left but enough to tell that. I had no idea there were that many versions of this style wheel cover. I only thought they came in argent and black.
I was lead to believe that the Explorer had their own specific center cap...with some sort of distinction from the others but that doesn't appear to be correct.
I keep learning.
