I just a had a tranny temp guage installed on my 97 E250 with the 5.4 engine and the trailer tow package. Instead of installing in the pan, I used one of the in line adaptors that allow you to tap into the line and place the sensor there. I had it installed on the line coming out of the pan into the cooler. Under normal conditions I'm pegging the guage out at over 250 degrees. Is this normal? Could this be a bad guage or sensor? I always heard the normal temp was the 160 to 180 range - this is waaaay over. I hope I'm just missing something. Any suggestions?
jfs999, I am no expert but I think that it is more important to know what temp. is going back into your transmission than coming out. The cooled fluid going into the trans. is what it is using to do the work so any fluid going to the cooler, after being used to move the truck, will be hotter. You have heard right, the best operating range for a trans. is around 175. You will need to move your sensor to the return line to get the reading you are after. Good luck
Trailer Life August 2003 page 60 has a short article on tranny temps.
They recommend between 175 and 230(230 is a bit high IMHO) Anything over 270 is really bad.
I think you do want the return line temperature.
I vaguely recall a temperature chart at a tranny shop and I think it said for every 10 degrees over something like 200, you are cutting the life in half.
