Noob Questions

Hi All,

I'm considering an Expedition and just want to see what the common things to look out for are along with the opinions on which year group to get. I currently have a 2011 GMC Sierra crew cab and have had two little gremlins pop up in the past couple weeks, so that has p***ed me off to say "should have bought a Ford". It's not that I think a vehicle should never hit a nickel and dime phase, it's that I think it should wait until it is paid off to do so. If I'm in that phase I might as well not have payments, and this being my first venture outside the Blue Oval I'll come back in.

I've worked on many Fords and have ripped into Windsors, 385's, and Mod-motors so I'm good with digging in. I just want to know what I'm getting into. Thanks!

From the research I've done so far I'm looking at 01 and 02 4x4 with the 5.4L. Those years have the PI SOHC heads and are backed up by 4r100 transmissions. Pre 01 have the old SOHC heads which could be changed fairly easily, but the 03+ all have 4R70's and I would prefer the heavier transmission for occasionally renting a U-haul and towing a car...and because I'd probably want to put a blower on it at some point after it being so easy to do on my Mustang.

Then your two biggest concerns could be the spark plugs are known for blowing out of the heads and the exhaust manifold studs rust and break.
