Hi all. I am about to buy an 89 F-150 with the 306 inline 6 in it. It was my dads run around truck and has a newly replaced motor , brakes and lots of little stuff, but it needs some TLC. Reading up on the tuck, I see it only got between 13-15 MPG and I am wondering if there is a tranny upgrade I could make to maybe help the MPG a bit. Not looking for miracles, I want an old truck I can restore and drive ... but I'd really love to have one that's as good on gas as the new ones..........without the payment. I know the engine is a good one, and was thinking about possibly adding a K&N with a performance chip............but Gears make the world go round.... Any thoughts?
Forget the whiz-bang filter and chip… not many have had any positive results with those.
My buddy put a K&N cold air kit on his MOPAR and he's getting worse fuel economy (I think he likes the new noise it makes and can't keep his foot outta the throttle).
If you have a 5 speed in it you should be able to squeeze 18-19 out of it… a little less with an automatic o/d.
The gear change will cost you $400-500 if you send it out to be done. You had better keep the truck a long time to recover your costs.
