New to the forum and need advise. I have the opportunity to buy a 2004 f250 with 160000 for $3000..the bad, it was parked 6 months ago because the truck started blowing white smoke, driven 1/2 mile and then towed. Company went bankrupt and truck was never fixed. Now the new company is getting rid of assets. I've read on the forum about the 6.0 issues and am willing to invest 4 or 5 thousand if I can have a reliable diesel when it's fixed. Appreciate any insight, I don't want to buy it only to find out it needs an $18,000 engine. Thanks!
For one a long block is only 13k 2nd it could just be a cooler, and since it was parked right away i doubt it would have did much damage. Get it started and put a scangauge on it and follow the 6.0 checks
There's even options like this that are cheaper than a 'new' engine. 2005 - 2007 F350/F250 6.0L Diesel Engine - A & A Auto & Truck LLC
Not sure of any reputation or anything of linked company, but it's a reasonable start if you need a new engine. Albeit it a relatively short time, In my constant Googling of the 6.0 I haven't seen too many in need of a block though. Just my 2¢, FWIW.
Thanks!! The $18000 quote came from a mechanic I called earlier today. He said most likely the engine was shot from sitting for 6 months and that it would be rusty inside. He also said to completely bulletproof would cost $15000
I doubt sitting for six months is the problem, unless water laid in the cylinders or something. Do a little more investigating and if it would fire up, buy it.
I may just trailer it down to a mechanic I trust. He said he would diagnose the problem for $200. Problem is, I have to make the decision soon or the offer will be passed on to someone else. I've got experience working on gas engines and have replaced a couple 350's but diesels are new to me. It's a nice lariat crew cab 4x4 so I hope it's the egr and the head gasket didn't blow. Thanks all
It's worth 3k even if the motor is blown. All else fails you can make your money back plus some parting it out. You can get a used motor for 3 or 4k. Bullet proof it for another 4k.

I agree, even with a used motor at $4k, you could sell it for $14+. But that is worst case scenario. Don't go on what every mechanic says. The PO of mine had a mechanic say it needed a new turbo. I got it for $2500 less and it was only a $2.00 map hose. I think I'm about $5-6k into mine now and almost bulletproof (minus oil cooler) and that was with new heads.
These engines really aren't that complicated once you get the idea down. And with some gas experience, you should be golden.
Stay WAY away from it......$3000.00 for a F250 Lariat in any condition is way to much, exactly where is this truck and what is the sellers name and phone number? I'll call him right up and give Him hell for trying to take advantage of you. hehehe.
Thanks for the shared opinions and mccrafty for the sarcasm.... I seem to have lost the phone #!!
Im going to pick it up in the next few days and see what happens. Maybe this is the one time ill end up with a smokin deal (WHITE smoke at least)!!

If the chassis is in good condition I really don't see how you could go wrong for that price..........providing you aren't investing the grocery/rent money. with a little luck if you spend no more than another $3000.00 to get it running good you will be able to double your money and maybe even more if you wanted to....or have a really nice ride for you and the family.
