Driveline Removal

I have a '77 F-250 Camper Special with the 400 and AT. I have broken the middle U-Joint on my 2 piece driveline. Can the U-joint be replaced without removing the driveline? If not what is the easiest way to remove the driveline? I plan on replacing all 3 U-Joints along with the carrier bearing.

It's a pretty straight-forward matter of unbolting things and then pulling it off. You should be able to figure it out. I like to unbolt the carrier first and reinstall it last though.

If you are replacing all u-joints and hanger bearing, you will have to remove the drive anyway. Replacing the front and back u-joints will result in a disconnected drive line, except for the hanger bearing... but you want to replace that too!

I agree with trozei. Some pics for your consideration.

Remove the 2 bolts - one is loose in photo.

front u-joint example. The u-bolts need to come off anyway.

Remember to chock your tires, both sides to keep it from moving front or back.

And if you have chalk, put references lines where connecting points are so you can reinstall it exactly as it came off. Maybe write "Front" and "Rear" on them also, since this is your first times.

Pictures before, will take any guesswork out later.

If U joints with zerks (greaseable) are available, get them.

Also chalk or paint marker a line down the d/s itself, so you get it back "in phase", or inline.

And if you get the u joint with zerks, make sure you get them installed the correct direction, they can be installed 180 out. Then when the d/s is reinstalled you can NOT get a grease gun end on there cause the pinion is in the way.

I always get the shaft balanced after a full U joint job.
