New member here. I'm on a limited budget and looking at a 2010 F150 Lariat V8 with the towing package and all the whistles and bells. It has 141k on it and the oil has been changed at 5k intervals via the carfax report at the dealer since new. One owner truck.
Dealer is asking $17,500 for it.
This would be my first truck, and my first Ford in nearly 40 years... I've been driving lots of other foreign brand cars my whole life and my needs have changed and I need a truck to pull a car trailer (light trailer, light car, no worries there with this vehicle.)
Should the fact this truck has 141k on it be a concern? I really don't want to spend any more for a truck right now, and this Lariat's interior looks as nice as any high end luxury car and the wife and I both like it a lot. HOWEVER, I thought it would be good to ask owners what the weak points are on the 2010 and what to ask about during a pre purchase inspection or if I should not purchase this vehicle at all.
Here are my thoughts. If the truck was cared for like you say, with 140+k you should expect some normal maintenance such as brakes, u-joints etc, if not done recently done by the preveious owner. Ask the dealer to check and verify the Ford recommended maintenance items like spark plugs, trans servicing etc. 140k on a well kept veh is nothing to shy away from. I own a 99 F350 diesel (16 yrs old this Feb) that just turned its first 100k, I bought it new, and it will last longer than me with the continued care I've given it. My 04 F150 Lariet was probably the nicest truck I ever owned, next to the 99. The 2013 F150 that replaced the 04, is in a class all its own. For a 2010, I'd get the dealer down as low as you can and go for it. Oh, and to make you feel better, go out on the lot and price a new one.
My opinion? Put up another $10K and get a $39,000 2014 end of
season sale, with $12,000 off in discounts.
With that many miles, probably highway miles on a truck only 4-5 years old, the
engine is probably in good shape, but the accessories have a lot of wear.
So does the suspension. Also time for various leaks to start.
Is this a 2 or 4 WD drive?
As for the whistles and bells, it can get expensive when the whistles get out of tune, and a bell quits ringing. Like the power seats, power mirrors, ect.
A well cared for vehicle will go well over 140,000 miles. You should figure out what services need to be done. If it needs spark plugs, anti-freeze, trans service, tires, or shocks, the costs can add up fast. You may find it's cheaper to get a newer truck. If the services are up to date then it could be a good deal. I don't remember the exact price but I think it was close to $400 for new plugs in my 08 SCREW with the 5.4.
Something that I would want to know is, how miles per year do you expect to drive this truck?
Personally, I would look at a far lesser equipped 2014 or 2013 hold over and start there.
My 2011 just turned 40K so I'm averaging about 13K+ per year, that's about average driving. I would pass on this truck or talk the dealer down significantly.
The Lariat seems to hold it's value very well. I'm on my 3rd Lariat now, I had a 2001, a 2008 and now the 2012. I'll be driving the 12 for a couple more years. The 01 & 08 had very good resale value when I was done with them.
I would pass- 141 is a ton of miles. More than average for sure.
Agreed, and I have priced newer used vehicles (FX4, Lariat) down this way with less miles for almost the same price. were it me, I'd much rather the 5.0L than the 5.4L, nothing wrong with the 5.4 to be sure, but the performance numbers are a lot better on the 5.0.
I purchased a 2010 Platinum with 64k miles on it Friday night. It's silver and has navigation and every other feature known to Ford on it.
Hopefully, I take delivery of it today. They're changing all the fluids, putting on new tires, and replacing belts and hoses and anything else that's shot on the vehicle before I pick it up.
BTW, I paid $24,995 for it. Not sure I stole it, but it was a competitive price and there were a bunch of other people and dealers calling on it when my buddy went over during lunch Friday to see it.
I fell in love with the Platinum trim as well...the only thing that sucks about that trim is the lower payload. You will have a great time with that truck...looking forward to seeing the pics!
