I just got headers put on my '97 4.6L F-150. As soon as I started it up, whenever I accelerate there is a clicking sound. Does this come with the headers or is there a problem? And how do I eliminate this clicking? It is like a tap or click that goes faster the more I accelerate. Can any one give me some advice?
Possibilities:
Exhaust leak that is coming from the flange gasket on one cylinder only.
Lifter tapping
I'm sure there are more, but those are my guesses.
i have the same prob. with my truck as soon as i start it up
and take off i hear the same thing but only for the first mile or so then it goes away ive tried to find the sound my dad an old ford mechanic tryed and 8 diffrent mechanics tryed but no results even ford hasent found anything its alomost like its not their even though you can hear it i have stock headers on my truck
i would check the torq on your head bolts to make shure they are torqed right
Usually an exhaust leak will go away, or at least quiet down some, when the engine warms up.
4.6's are bad for breaking manifold studs where the manifold attaches to the heads, especially on the passengers side.
They can be hard to see. You might need a flashlight and mirror.
If it didn't do it before the header install, then I would say that you have an exhauset leak, either at the gasket between the head and header, or the pipe isn't seated properly to the bottom of the header. You should be able to see some black soot near the leak from the exhaust leaking.

as everyone has said, exhaust leak. i would check the header bolts where it bolts up to the heads along with where the headers mats to the rest of the exhaust. at my shop we always tighten the header bolts down then drive it for 10-15 mins then let the engine cool then retighten them. hence elimiating exhaust leaks.
