Hello new to the site question maybee someone can HELP have 03 f350 7.3 driving home from work today doing 70-75 oil pressure droped to 0 check gauge light came on then pick back up did it twice help please
Thanks joe
The oil pressure sending unit is on top of the HPOP reservoir, under the plastic shroud that covers the fuel filter housing. I'd start by checking to make sure the connector is seated fully. These engines won't run long without oil pressure. The HPOP will starve for oil, the injectors won't fire without high pressure oil, and the engine will shut down.
Thats the nice thing about these engines with the huie pump you cannot blow the motor by running out/low on oil it will simply shut down (pretty much the exact same thing Pikachu just stated). Back on schedule the sending unit could possibly be on its way out. I defiantly would start with what Pikachu stated first with the wiring. Welcome to FTE these guys know what they are talking about here.
Another part of the High pressure oil is the IPR valve. If you have access to an Android device you can run Torque App and monitor the sensors in real time that could help narrow down your problem. Here is the link to set it up....
Your oil pressure gauge in the dash went to zero on the way home but the truck continued to run fine. The oil pressure light came in the dash but not the check engine light correct?
Replaced the oil pressure sensor on top of the HPOP reservoir.
Drove around town with no problems until you got on the highway then the oil pressure gauge in the dash dropped and the oil pressure light came on but still no check engine light. Did it feel like it ran any different? Or if you didn't see the oil pressure light come on you would not have felt any difference?
It's a mechanical pump, I can't see how the pressure would actually change like that.
It has to be an electrical issue with the gauge IMO.
Yep, either the gauge or the sensor.....I've had my oil pressure sensor go bad. Truck ran fine since the actual pressure and ICP was were it was supposed to be. The gauge just jumped around and set the oil can light on the dash. IIRC the oil pressure sensor is run straight to the dash gauge.
IIRC the pressure gauge and the oil light are both run off the same switch. The gauge isn't really a gauge just shows whether the switch is closed or not. Sure sounds like a wiring issue if your getting both the oil light and the gauge is dropping to zero at the same time.
Disconnect the wire connector at the sensor and check for oil in the top of the sensor. If there is blow it out with some compressed air and reconnect.
It is only a temporary fix but will show you if your sensor is bad or not.
Did you buy one from Ford for $30 or from an auto parts dealer?
