Turbo to Intercooler Pipe Joiners Leaking

G'day Guys,

I have noticed oil leaking from the blue joiners in this pipe. Not heaps just enough to require wiping every other week. The one at the intercooler intake has leaked onto chassis and made an oily area but not enough to drip on floor.
I've nipped up the stainless ring clamp as much as I'm game especially as the intercooler intake is plastic and I dont want to crack it ........ and they are still weeping a bit !!!

Is this normal ? My next step is to remove them, clean areas with brakecleen, dry and refit.
Do aftermarket turbo joiners work any better ?

Maybe double clamping at 180deg opposite with the clamp tension bolts ?

Regards
Anthony

So long as you leave the crankcase ventilation system stock, you will never be able to stop the seep. Brake cleaner does a fine job on the hoses, but it will always come back eventually.

Follow the intake tube from the air filter back to the turbo, right in the middle of that tube you'll find a hard plastic joiner with a small rubber hose piped into the bottom of it. That is the crankcase vent, and it is dumping oil/smoke/mist straight into, and through, your turbo and into the charge air cooler where it collects, and seeps out of the connection boots.

The only sure cure is to re-route the crankcase vent tube.

Cookie88,

Thanks for info ! I just looked at it .... MMMmmmmm ! That sucks ! pun intended ...... [smile]

Is there a standard fix for this on the site ?

Also looking at it ....could you maybe use a aluminium catch tank about 10in X 3in re-route hose to bottom of tank (with baffle system inside) then out top of tank into intake again ? Maybe even a drain valve in bottom of baffled tank to drain monthly ?

If I ever take intercooler off I'll get a drain TIG welded into the bottom of that also ? Maybe there is not a lot of oil going in it just looks that way.

Yep, that would work just fine. I chose a simpler method, I just let it vent to the atmosphere. I reversed the CCV on the valvecover and ran about 10 feet of 3/4" heater hose over the master cylinder and down the driver side (on this side of the pond ) framerail.

I wouldn't worry about a bung in the intercooler, it looks like more oil than it actually is. Just soap and water it it you ever pull the intercooler.

Cookie88,

I went to a custom intercooler maker this morning and he says he does a lot of air/oil separators for turbo cars. He uses 3,4,5, inch aluminium tube capped at each end with inlet/outlet barbs to suit diameter of hoses.
Uses special baffle screens inside with stainless steel scourers between screens ( I think in USA is Brillo Pad type thing in stainless) The drain plug is like in the tank of an air compressor.

Thanks again ...
Anthony
