I must say, this site is full of so much awesome information! Let me introduce myself. I am in western NY, right down the road from Mac's. My son and I picked up a 1947 Ford pick up a few weeks ago as a project to work on together. We have restored a few farm implements, and hay balers, but this taking a huge step here. We will have plenty of help from friends that are enthusiast's.
The truck we picked up has been modified a long time ago. It was originally from California, and came to New York in 1970. It needs a complete restoration. There was a modification done to it in the 60's, from what I was told. The truck is solid, but has a few issues. There is a seized 1962 Corvette 327 motor in it, and it has a nice 1952/53 chevy box, rear fenders and tailgate. The truck has been parked in a garage since 1974. The head gasket leaked, and rusted the cylinders a bit.
I look forward to the time that friends and family will spend together on the truck. We are thinking of swapping the bed out with new, adding a IFS and putting a 302 in it. The body is fairly solid, but has a horrible grill modification. We are starting from scratch here, but are eager to get started.
Looks like you got yourself a nice solid start there. I like your plans. It will look much nicer with a Ford bed. The Chevy beds are too shallow looking. As for engine choice, very nice. It's kind of tiring to see a Chevy in a Ford, no offense to anybody that goes that route. Post more pictures as you can
, we love pictures here.
Thank you. We will start by pulling the bed and motor. I am hoping to be able to sell the chevy bed and fenders. It is in nice shape. The block might have worth if someone needs it for a 1962 corvette project motor; I hope we can move that too. I find that pictures are indeed worth 1000 words, especially typed words. We will make sure to post them. This will be a long project, we will work on little things while saving up money for the big things.
You are so lucky to be down the road from Mac's! I've ordered a lot from them and it would have been nice not having to pay the shipping charges. I am 3/4 done with my 46 1/2 ton.
Well, I spent the last few days talking to people about our plan. Now thinking of a IFS from Fatman, and looking to put a new axle in the rear. Wondering how much forgiveness there will be in width. I think the original is 58 3/8" track in the rear. I need to go through the threads here and look to see what people found worked well.
We are looking to grab a few parts we know we will need soon. Being right down the road from Macs might be a good thing.....but I tend to be a little OCD.....I vow to only pay as we go on this.....
Very nice info on the axles, Thank you! The motor mount link was for trolling motors, but I will look at the fatman site. We are thinking of putting the 302 in it. I am going to talk to our shop guy down the road to see what he has. I was told to look for a motor from a fox body to avoid any issue with the oil pan and cross member.
I like the idea of a explorer swap. How hard was it to keep the correct angle of the axle pad? I did stop and talk to my mechanic buddy down the road. He said he might have an early 70's bronco 9" rear end that I could have cheap. He is going to call a bunch of his contacts to see what is out there for a motor and transmission as well. I would imagine the axle pads will need to be moved on just about any swap.

Here's a pict of the Fatman IFS and the tubular motor mounts (you can sort of see then) - They don't get in the way of anything and I'm running a 550+ HP 427.. I did have to get beefier springs from Eaton, but the ones from Fatman will be more than enough for your application.
WOW! I just got through looking at your build thread! It did not come up on google when I was looking hard for info for the last several weeks. You did a great job. I will be nowhere near as creative. The truck looks awesome.
