Comp Cams

Hey all,
Im thinking about putting a Comp Cam into my 460 in my 79 Ranchero. Ive heard the term mild cam before. What does this mean? I was told that if i also change my cam, it would make the exhaust have a explosion pop sound instead of a rumble. How big or what of a cam would do this? Im also trying to understand all the numbers on this. It say Duration @ .050" intake is 253 degrees and exhaust is 253. Lift intake is .585" and exhaust is same. What does all that mean? How big would be too big? Cause i know that if its too big, the engine will stop if your foot is off the accelerator. Thanks a lot everyone!
Danny

Lightbulb Comp Cams

Danny,

I believe that's too much cam. I have a '72 and it is probably about 300-400 pounds lighter than yours and I wouldn't go that high. You should keep the duration at .050 at or below 230 deg. Mine is 224 deg. It is a comp cams 270H and advertised power band is 1800-5800. Low end torque is what get our land yachts going not high RPM horsepower. Watch that lift too. Talk to folks over on the big block forum and ask what the largest lift is safe without flycutting the pistons.

You are absolutely right about drivability. Even at 224 deg I had to go to a 2400 stall converter and higher gearing in the rear end.

If you go high duration, you won't be happy unless you match the parts. If you don't want to change the converter or rearend, and have it be quicker and more fun, you might look at the comp cams 268H. OBTW, even though I used comp cams, there are a bunch of good cams out there and a lot of folks here who could give your their experiences.

Good luck,

Steve

Comp Cams

Hey Steve,
Thanks for your help. Now you said that low end torque gets us going, not high RPM horsepower. So what other things can i do to get what i need. Would putting on some new heads do anything? I was thinking about Edelbrock RPM heads. I was always looking at horsepower, so i don't know what can get me the best torque. Thanks a lot for your help. And be sure to tell me about your mufflers.
Thanks
Danny
