I hope someone can help me out with a problem I'm having. I have a '94 Explorer. I'm having intermittent starting problems. It used to happen once a week, then once every few days, now I'm lucky if it starts twice a day. It will crank, but it won't start. It's worse when it's hot, but lately the temperature seems to matter less. To make matters worse (as though being repeatedly stranded isn't enough) my husband and brother, thinking it was a coil pack problem, tried to replace it with a coil pack from a 91 Ranger. It didn't work so they put mine back together. NOW - it still only starts when it feels like it, AND it's throwing off some serious vibration. Are there any problems that are common to 94 explorers?
is your fuel filter good. maybe bad fuel pump. maybe bad plugs.. ffuel tank vent lines arent clogged? bad coils is a good choice but i dont know if the ranger to exedition swap ruled out coils as a problem i.e. get a new coil pack if you want to rule out that problem. long shot is your timing chain is off. if you have a MAF on your expedition, make certain it is clean.
Luckily, a family member of mine is a Snap On dealer. He ran a few tests, but the only code the scanner showed was for the EGO. I had the original coil pack put back on and he discovered they'd put two of the spark plugs on out of order. No more vibrating since Friday afternoon. The truck has started - but there is some occassional hesitation with starting. He seems to think the starting problem is electrical and he showed me that I have a small exhaust leak. I'm not entirely sure it will continue to start as it has this weekend - it's gone almost 3-4 days starting fine before messing up again. So we haven't narrowed down what the exact problem was/is.
Where is that small exhaust leak? I've had small exhaust leaks puff on a starter and make it not crank when it was hot(not your problem I know), but I was wondering if it could be blowing on something else, making it overheat?
If you look under the right side of the truck where the exhaust system runs between the front passenger seat and the rear passenger seats - there is a high pitched chattering squeal, the kind of sound you would likely here if you were were in a small room full of rodents. I don't know enough about it to tell you what exact part it is, but I didn't see any fluid leaks or smoke/vapors under there. I was told it had to be small and that it was difficult to tell exactly where the sound was coming from. I don't think the truck has overheated though - I just replaced the waterpump, thermostat, radiator, and flushed the whole cooling system, and the gauges always stay on the cool end. - No one has been able to figure out what has been causing the truck to not start, I've spent over $5k this year between the new transmission and repairs - resale is probably no more than $3,500 and $4k. I may just have to fix minor things and trade in.
