farm truck problems

first post and first problem. woohoo.
i got a 1988 F250 super cab, 5.8, 2wd, auto.
ive had a hard time getting information on these 2wd models so here i am.
now the problem I'm having... on occasion she slips like no other, throw her in park then back into drive and she'll be good for a bit. also from a dead stop she shakes then grinds to find 2nd.
i checked the fluid, it definitely needs to be replaced but should i bother if my symptoms are asking for a new transmission?

Friends of mine had slipping and grinding transmissions, they both almost entirely fixed their issues by replacing what seemed to be 100,000 mile transmission fluid and filter.

Just a suggestion. Not always the answer.

New fluid and new filter could clear up your problems.

You likely need to rebuild it but a fluid change would do a lot. All the symptoms you describe tell me it's on it's way out. We once had a truck with identical symptoms except it would grind in 3rd. Does the fluid look burnt? Metal flakes? Thin? What color?

Yeah, do a fluid/filter change. New tranny pan gasket too. Nasty color is normal if it hasn't been done for years, and no metal flakes is a plus. When you drop the pan you'll find out if there is any metal shavings on the magnet or if the filter is laying in the pan where it shouldn't be.

no filters in town so i just flushed 10L and replaced it will some fresh stuff. overall it runs smoother but there is still a massive grind in the first couple gears. so i guess my next and final question would be what transmission should i find for this thing. go with original or is there something better i can replace it with.

What's in it now? C6 or E4OD?

I'm pretty sure the E4OD didn't come out till 89. The other option was an AOD.

I am not 100% sure on this suggestion but maybe if you have the C6 the transmission modulator valve. Maybe even the vacuum line to it broke?

It's been my experience that 100% of the time when an auto trans makes GRINDING sounds, it's done with life.

Yank that sucker out and put in a 5 speed! If not then...

AOD: 4 speed (3+ overdrive). Not the strongest in stock form but can be made better with a good rebuild.

C6: 3 speed, NO overdrive. Pretty tough trans in stock form, and the predecessor to the E4OD/4R100.

You can ID your trans using these links. Look at the trans pan to figure out which one you have.

she's got the C6. I'm going to have to agree with dixie460 here. i don't know much about trans but i know that they don't grind unless its about to grenade.
