first post and first problem. woohoo.
i got a 1988 F250 super cab, 5.8, 2wd, auto.
ive had a hard time getting information on these 2wd models so here i am.
now the problem I'm having... on occasion she slips like no other, throw her in park then back into drive and she'll be good for a bit. also from a dead stop she shakes then grinds to find 2nd.
i checked the fluid, it definitely needs to be replaced but should i bother if my symptoms are asking for a new transmission?
Friends of mine had slipping and grinding transmissions, they both almost entirely fixed their issues by replacing what seemed to be 100,000 mile transmission fluid and filter.
You likely need to rebuild it but a fluid change would do a lot. All the symptoms you describe tell me it's on it's way out. We once had a truck with identical symptoms except it would grind in 3rd. Does the fluid look burnt? Metal flakes? Thin? What color?
Yeah, do a fluid/filter change. New tranny pan gasket too. Nasty color is normal if it hasn't been done for years, and no metal flakes is a plus. When you drop the pan you'll find out if there is any metal shavings on the magnet or if the filter is laying in the pan where it shouldn't be.
no filters in town so i just flushed 10L and replaced it will some fresh stuff. overall it runs smoother but there is still a massive grind in the first couple gears. so i guess my next and final question would be what transmission should i find for this thing. go with original or is there something better i can replace it with.
she's got the C6. I'm going to have to agree with dixie460 here. i don't know much about trans but i know that they don't grind unless its about to grenade.
i know there are two different c6 for fords big block and small block. ive got the small block 351w in my truck. if i happen to have a c6 from a big block is it possible to switch the guts over from the BB c6 to the SB c6
alright ill look more into it. would a c4 bolt up and keep the stock drive shaft. ive had a hard time finding info on possible swaps. my small block c6 is shot and i have sourced a c6 big block and a small block c4. whats my best option.
