what gear?
i am putting a 289 in my 68 f100 step side...... it currently has a 240 IL6 in it..... i am thinking i will need to change the rear end gears.....right now i have a real short 1st great i can start off in second gear if i want to( i am keeping the 3 speed for now also)
what gear do yall think i should go with?

Can't see why you should change. I would think the 240 and 289 are comparable for torque.
With the 289, you should pick up some more revs. It may be a little weaker on the bottom, but I don't think it will show compared to the 240 inline.
get it all setup and see how it drives. A tach would be good for helping to diagnose whether or not a gear change is a good idea.

what gear?
i was told i was 4:11 in the rear end........ and i have another question i have the 240 IL6 in there now........ and the clutch petal has a bar it piviots on that uses the motor as kind of a brace. do they sell a kit or will i have to make it work some how or will the 289 do kind of the same thing?
