79 F250 Drivetrain
I have a 79 F250, 2wd, 351M. I want to start rebuilding her, and am looking to swap in a 460/ZF5. This will be my first venture into modifying a truck. I work at a PicknPull, so am going to be getting a ZF5 soon, to rebuild and mate up with a 460 I am rebuilding for towing. Fuel economy is a factor, why I am going with a 5 speed.
Want to know is if there is anyone out there that has done any similar project? If so, how difficult was it for you? Do I need to keep the ZF5 hydraulic or can be done mechanically? Any tips for internals I should know about? This is all new to me, but I love to learn new things/tricks.
Thx for the help
The ZF is a squeeze, I had to roll my firewall seem, trim an extra aluminum extrusion off the trans case, open up the hole in the trans tunnel for the shift tower to stick through the floor and some other things that most likely won't pertain to you since I also have a massive tailshaft drum brake.
For the trans mount I took the rubber isolator for the ZF, put it on the my factory 78 crossmember and mounted the crossmember to the frame rails after removing the crossmember to frame 90* brackets. Since you're also doing and engine swap it will already be out of the way but I will NEVER do any trans service on my truck without pulling the engine.
