oil pressure
I got into my truck the other day and started down the road and the pressure gage shot up and high as it would go. So I pulled over and shut off the truck. Waited a while and started it back up and the needle was back to normal. Now I am noticing that as I am driving the gage will shoot up for a bit then back down. Once a smacked the dash and the needle went back down then right back up a minute later. My question is that can it be fixed. I assume that something is dirty. Can I fix it by cleaning with the good ole WD40 or does it need replaced.

If your other gages are doint the same thing I would suspect that you need to replace the IVR (instrument voltage regulator). It is on the printed circuit board that the gages are mounted in. It is supposed to supply no more than 2 volts.

i dont know what vehicle you have but it should have a 1 wire pressure sending unit (on an 86 302 it is behind the powr steering bracket) and if this wire is bare and is being grounded out at times it will cause full gauge reading only if it is the 1 gauge though if it is all gauges then it is the printed circuit
