Several questions

I have a 460 4v with 69000 miles. I am bouncing around the idea of a rebuild. What are the best options for semi-performance parts, i.e: Heads and Cam. I know that a better intake and modern 4bbl with headers will help but what are some of the performance mods that you know of?
Second Question:
Of course I have the HD Dana gear in the pumpkins but what about going with a set of newer axles and more highway friendly gears? Would newer super duty axles fit a Highboy? Would the benefit of 3.73, etc gears be worth the investment? I would like the rear discs as well.
Third question:
Does anyone make a kit for the steering mod or do we need to source the parts for ourselves to switch to the newer steering mod?
Fourth and last question: is the 355 a FE motor or is that something different? The 460 is a 355 series correct?

To give you the best answer we need more information. Like tire size, transmission, and intended use.

1: performance-
460's are capable of quite a lot of power. An easy way to accumulate all(or most) of the parts you need would be to buy a stroker kit. Cam will depend on your usage. Aluminum heads or dove heads will flow better and yield more power. A single plane intake with a properly sized carb will help power. Headers are a necessity with a performance build. A hot coil and ignition module will help things run stronger as well.

2:gears/axles-
This depends greatly on your current setup and intended usage.

#4: The 460 is a "385 series"

335 series: 351C, 351C Boss, 351C H.O., 351M and the 400.

385 series: 429, 429CJ, 429 Police, 460 and 460 Police.

The engine tips were very helpful, Thanks.

As for usage, it will not be a tough working truck. Probably won't leave the pavement very often. I just wonder if switching out the 4:10s for something more efficient wouldn't help? Also the question was really: Is it easier to update the running gear as it is or is it easier to just install newer running gear? My setup is mild, 460 (stock) with C6. I have no idea what my transfer case is.

Also a wierd question-

I kept reading about the Highboys and gas tanks came up. Mine is a Ranger. No tank in the cab but two under the bed. Is that right or normal?

It is not difficult To swap gears. It's also more cost effective than a new axle. Gear ratios will be recommended by what tire size you plan to run. There are a few charts that will show up on Google for what gears work with what tire size for economy, balance, and power.

The gas tanks sound correct

The transfer case is divorced. I have the narrower frame and all the other Highboy characteristics.

Thanks for all the replies and help

So far, I have learned that I have a 385 series motor.
I have learned that there are options for building it up a bit.
It is easier and more cost effective to switch gears than switch axles.

So far what I still have questions about:
Why I don't have a gas tank in the cab like most highboys.
Whether there is a kit to switch the steering to a 78/79.

Thanks in advance for all the info. This forum rocks!

This site might help in narrowing down what you want to build.

On the gas tank question I don't know for sure but could it be possible someone swapped beds on your truck and eliminated the cab tank?
Kit: I don't recall seeing anyone posting of one. I believe they take parts from later years.

Visit the tech thread compilation sticky for info on mildly hopping up the 460. A torquey cam, 4V intake, and 650 cfm will garner upwards of 400 hp on about a $1500-$2000 budget.

LOVE the 460 site!

That 460 Site is Rad!
I am a little weirded out by the gas tank situation. I'll have to call the original owner and see why the tank was moved. Not a big deal, it gets gas the way it is! LOL (And ALOT of it!)

Looking at some cool heads, cam, Intake, headers and carbs for the rig. I just need to find gears.

Valve cover stickers

Anyone have a good place to find the original OEM valve cover stickers?
