Most likely, what you are seeing is just the tip of the iceberg.

The only correct way to fix it is to cut the rust out and replace the metal. I know that isn't what you wanted to hear but it's true.

Any other fix, isn't. In other words, fiberglass, filler, Por-15 products, & etc. are not the answer. You are rusting from both sides of the metal.

It is rusting from the inside of the panel out. So by the time you see the rust it is too late to do anything about. POR 15 and similar products are made to be used on the rust BEFORE it eats thru the metal. Once it has gone thru, as in your case, the panel must be replaced. You genrally have two choices in this matter. 1 would be the whole bedside. 2 is gonna be a patch panel. Now there are pros and cons to each option.

Pros for New bedside:
By replacing the whole panel you can coat the inside with POR15 to prevent rust from ever starting.
No filler in the middle of panel where the patch panel went in.
If its a competend body shop should take less time for bedside replacement.

Pros for Patch Panel:
Easy.
Cheaper (usually)

Cons for Bedside:
Cost is the big one. The panel will cost more as will the labor to install. THe paint should be the same.

Cons for Patch Panel:
Unable to get all the rust from inside the panel, meaning rust will again surface in the future.
You cant coat the patch with POR 15 or similar before install because welding will burn some or all of it off.
You have Body Filler (no matter how good you are at patching there will still be some filler) in the patch to make it straight.
Patch panels usually are considered aftermarket parts. Meaning cheaper metal (thinner) and probably not stamped on OE dies.

Hope this helps!

wheel well rust.........

I have a sandblast shop and do these repairs a lot. cutting out the rust and welding in new metal is good but there is still rust in behind and you cant get paint in between the two welded pieces. so sand blast it all and get all the rust ,then a little knowen thing, get some thing called 8084 from a fiberglass shop put on and you will never have rust problems again ,then fiberglass the rust holles, body fill over top,and paint. it will out live any welded job in the countury.even if you drive in salt water.Larry
